BUENA PARK - Estancia High junior kicker Dan Cabrera had never made a field goal in a varsity football game. Late in Friday night's contest the Eagles needed Cabrera, who kicked on junior varsity last year. He said he was confident he could come through. In Cabrera's head, the 36-yard field goal has never in question. Cabrera transferred his thoughts to the field. He easily nailed the field goal with 55 seconds left in the fourth quarter, lifting Estancia to a 17-14 victory at Buena Park.

BUENA PARK - Driving the ball down the field was not a problem Friday night for the Costa Mesa High football team. The Mustangs repeatedly did it in the first half in their season opener. If it wasn't senior running back Mario Smith moving the chains, it was senior quarterback Nathan Alvis finding his favorite targets, Jordan Walden and Trace Curet. The drives stalled, though, and host Buena Park pulled away for a 34-13 nonleague victory. Costa Mesa still has not won a season opener since 2001.

This election's got me all "whoppygoggled!" My mother hails from southeastern Kansas, a couple of miles north of the Oklahoma border. Her mother was from Missouri and her father was from Arkansas — states near my mom's Montgomery County, Kan., birthplace. Kansas was never part of Dixie, but accents in southeastern Kansas — at least for people who were born there in the early decades of the 20th century — can be as twangy as any you'll encounter in the Deep South.

In some cases, it's a good thing when the squeaky wheel doesn't get the grease. Take Saturday, for example, when a Newport Beach man realized someone was stealing his bag full of hockey equipment because he heard the bag's distinct noise as they rolled it to a waiting car. It was almost 2 in the afternoon when a homeowner in the 300 block of Onyx Avenue on Balboa Island was watering his plants. From the alley, he heard what sounded like his duffel bag full of hockey equipment getting wheeled away.

COSTA MESA — The Estancia High football team would surely have preferred victory formation. But the Eagles didn't leave the field following a 21-13 nonleague home loss to Buena Park Thursday night without one of their own successfully executing the act of taking a knee. Estancia assistant coach Chris Bargas, the younger brother of Eagles' head man Mike Bargas, used an electronic scoreboard message to ask Mandy Carsten to marry him after the Eagles came up short on the field for the first time in two games.
