BASEBALL CAL 6, UC Irvine 0 BERKELEY — Some fifth-inning wildness ruined what until then was a strong outing by Anteaters' starting pitcher Dylan Axelrod Sunday at Evans Diamond. The victory gives the Golden Bears two wins in the three-game nonconference series that opened the season for both teams. Axelrod, a senior right-hander, had held the Bears scoreless until two outs in the fifth. He put two runners aboard, via walks, then hit a batter with two outs to bring up Josh Satin, who doubled in three runs for all the hosts would need.

IRVINE ? It's a good thing the UC Irvine baseball team has the week off from Big West Conference play. The Anteaters might be sleeping through the weekend. UC Irvine, playing the longest game in school history, scored two runs in the bottom of the 15th inning to defeat UNLV, 4-3, on Tuesday night at Anteater Ballpark. It marked UC Irvine's sixth consecutive victory and tenth out of the last 11. The Anteaters left 17 runners on base through 14 innings, but when the Rebels scored a run off reliever Dylan Axelrod in the top of the 15th, they responded.

Standing at second base, Bryan Petersen focused in on a wave of cavorting teammates who were emerging from the sea of more than 8,000 stunned Wichita State fans hunched silently in their seats. He had just doubled in the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday to clinch a Super Regional sweep and propel the No. 4-ranked UC Irvine baseball team (45-15-1) to its first College World Series. But before he could think about Omaha, the sculpted 6-foot, 200-pound junior thought first about survival.

Off the plane and ready to grab his bags, Bryan Petersen saw everyone else smile after a lengthy flight from Los Angeles Thursday. Then a teammate picked up his bags as if he was VIP. The UC Irvine right fielder knew something was up in Wichita, Kan., where the fourth-ranked Anteaters (43-15-1) open a Super Regional best-of-three series with No. 8 Wichita State (53-20) Saturday. Before giving him the news of getting drafted in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Florida Marlins, Taylor Holiday passed Petersen the cell phone.
