Patrick Laverty Entering Friday's game against Troy High, Corona del Mar tailback Austin Brawner had 10 career varsity carries for 18 yards. He had shown potential. First, in a preseason scrimmage in 2002, his sophomore year, when he posted touchdown runs of 40 and 5 yards. Then again in this season's preseason scrimmage, he ran for 53 yards on five carries. But in his first significant varsity action, after receiving five carries late in the 2002 season opener, Brawner gained just 12 yards on five carries in Corona del Mar's season-opening victory over Costa Mesa.

Bryce Alderton Corona del Mar High's football team stuck to its game plan from a week ago, only Friday night it actually produced better results. Using a fluid ground attack that amassed 314 rushing yards and a staunch defense that forced five turnovers, the host Sea Kings downed visiting Troy, 22-7, in a nonleague game at Newport Harbor. Junior tailback Austin Brawner, who gained just 12 yards on five carries in a Week 1 victory over Costa Mesa, broke loose for 198 yards on 24 carries Friday, including touchdown runs of 5 and 31 yards in the first half.
