couple of field goals. GARDEN GROVE - Alissa Zoelle threw a one-hit shutout for Corona del Mar High's softball team, but considering the 27 runs she had to work with, it was slight overkill. For the Estancia High football team, preparation for tonight’s game at Bolsa Grande is no different than any other contest. Sure, the Eagles beat Bolsa Grande 56-0 last year. Coach Mike Bargas rattled the score off when asked about it. But there is another, more recent score to worry about as Estancia prepares for kickoff tonight at 7 at Bolsa Grande: 35-6. That’s the deficit by which the Eagles lost to Aquinas in Week Zero. And it’s the latter score that should ensure that Estancia doesn’t overlook the Matadors tonight on the road.

In an attempt to put a number in the win column, Costa Mesa High football coach Jeremy Osso is trying addition by subtraction. Osso said he is cutting back on the two-way starters for the Mustangs in tonight’s game at 7 at Bolsa Grande. Last week, Costa Mesa (0-3) had six such players. Tonight, Osso said he expects just three — quarterback and safety Brian Waldron, fullback-linebacker Cody De La Mater and receiver-safety John Salyer. The reason, he said, is to try to preserve a Costa Mesa defense that’s allowing over 41 points per game through the first three games of the season.

COSTA MESA — Friday was an emotional night for the Costa Mesa High football team. There was happiness for the team's first victory of the season, 17-8, over Bolsa Grande at Orange Coast College, after three defeats. But there was anger for still not having played up to its potential. There was cornerback Manuel Gomez's concussion late in the first half. As he went in and out of consciousness it brought back memories for Mustangs Coach Jeremy Osso of a game in 2001 when senior Matt Colby collapsed on the sideline and died later of brain injuries incurred on the field.

A controlled preseason afternoon scrimmage in your practice gear is far removed from the fanfare of Friday Night Lights. But Estancia High sophomore quarterback Connor Brown revealed on Friday that he might be more apt to dazzle than be dazzled when the Eagles open their football season Friday night on the road against Loara. "I think he's so green, he has no fear right now," Estancia Coach Mike Bargas said of the tall, talented signal caller who threw four touchdown passes and ran for another touchdown to help the Eagles get the better of Bolsa Grande at Jim Scott Stadium.
