The Blue Devils, a boys Division 4 squad from AYSO Region 97, posted a 3-0 victory over the Psychos on Saturday. R.J. D'Cruz opened the scoring with a goal from 18-yards out off an assist from Flavio Cuevas. Taylor Friend scored the Blue Devils' second goal unassisted, while Jonathan Gordon added a third goal off an assist from Edgar Torres. The Blue Devils' defense was led by goalies Ian Fowler and Taylor Stevenson, fullbacks Johnny Savoji, Adam Knott and Grant Jackson and midfielders Preston Davey, Johnathan Sutterfield, Brandon Woods and Jordan Hovis.

NEWPORT BEACH - The Red Raiders and Blue Devils played to a 2-2 draw on Oct. 9, in AYSO Region 57 boys under 12 soccer action. Peter Fankuchen and Paul Bioche each scored for the Blue Devils to tie the game. For the Red Bombers, Nick Freeman and Andy Rovzar scored goals, while Ford Noe left the game with a broken arm. A strong Blue Devils' defense, led by Geoffrey Grant, Mike Brusic, Omeed Alipour and Andrew Garten, held the Red Raiders back. Parker Rhodes and David Grant used solid ball-handling to spark the Blue Devils' comeback.

The Chick Magnets defeated the Blue Devils, 3-0, in AYSO Region 57 boys under 12 action Saturday. Patrick Suozzi scored all three goals on assists by Taylor Otto, Austin Harms and Colton Dillion. Daniel Kernan and Geoff Machin also sparked the Chick Magnets' offense with crisp passes. On defense, Magnets' goalkeeper Nick Taylor delivered a shutout with numerous saves. He was helped on defense by the strong play of Michael Page, Taylor Stone, Tom Hutchinson and Jeremy Hyter.

NEWPORT BEACH - Team Ameba, a boys under 14 soccer team from AYSO Region 97, defeated the White Diablos, 5-1, on Sept. 9. Brian Frey scored four goals to lead Team Ameba, while Brandon Sowers chipped in with a goal. In goal, Ruben Ordaz made two solid saves for Team Ameba. For the White Diablos, Tyler Parker scored the team's lone goal. In Division 4 action: Blue Devils 3, Jail Birds 2 - R.J. D'Cruz, Taylor Stevenson and Edgar Torres each scored for Blue Devils, bringing the team back from a 2-0 deficit.

NEWPORT BEACH - The Amoeba 2000 AYSO Region 97 boys under 14 soccer team shut out Team #3, 5-0, Sunday. Sean Rowe scored three goals for the Amoeba, while Brendon Sowers chipped in with two. Philip Houten, Chase Nelson, Clayton Heuser and Luis Ordaz led the Amoeba's defense. In Division 4 action: Blue Devils 8, Silver Knights 1 - Taylor Friend had two goals while Edgar Torres, Taylor Stevenson, R.J. D'Cruz, Flavio Cuevas, Jonathan Gordon and Ian Fowler each added single tallies for the Blue Devils.

There are several goals for the young players in Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball. Of course they want to win, but aside from victories, they use a certain achievement as motivation. They want to become an all-star. Newport-Mesa NJB announced Wednesday its 2010 boys’ Division 1 All-Star teams. The teams will represent the league at the NJB All-Star tournaments set for March 13-14 and March 20-21. SOCCER AYSO AREA Q PLAYOFFS BOYS' UNDER-10 GOLD Corona del Mar Region 57 reached the semifinals of the tournament, losing to North Irvine in a penalty kick shootout. The score was tied, 1-1, after regulation. Corona del Mar advanced to the semifinals with victories over Newport Beach Region 97 (3-0), Costa Mesa Region 120 (3-0) and Yorba Linda/Placentia Region 1398 (1-0), and draws with Tustin Region 96 (2-2) and South Irvine Region 213 (1-1). The team is made up of Matthew Elmajian, Drew Hanson, Justin Hanson, Ryan Cargile, Jack Klein, David Karamardian, Jeffrey Meyer, Brett Greenlee, Brandon Wolfe, Connor Kelter, Max Premer and Daniel Munoz.

Caught in the everyday swirl of her volleyball swan song, as well as the demands of being a student-athlete at one of the nation's preeminent academic institutions, Duke University senior Krista Dill is thankful not to have much time to ponder hypotheticals. But, with just five regular-season matches remaining in a 10-year career that began as a reluctant seventh-grader, Dill, the Blue Devils' 6-foot-3 middle blocker and co-captain, is quite sure that the imminent end to her playing days will change her life in ways she has not yet begun to fathom.

In the first game of the playoffs, the Blue Devils defeated the Argonauts, 5-2, in AYSO Region 97 boys Division 4 action Saturday afternoon. Flavio Cuevas scored three goals to pace the Devils' offense, while R.J. D'Cruz added a goal and three assists and Preston Davey chipped in with a goal. Cuevas, Edgar Torres and Johnny Savoji each had assists, while goalkeeper Ian Fowler stopped 14 shots hit his way. On defense, Taylor Friend, Adam Knott, Jordan Davis, Taylor Stevenson and Brandon Woods each made big plays to slow the Argonauts' offense.

The Red Raiders used a late goal from Nick Freeman to defeat the Funky Monkeys, 3-2, Saturday in AYSO Region 57 boys under 12 action. Andy Rovzar scored two goals to spark the Red Raiders early in the contest. Rovzar's goals were set up by strong passing from Stuart Hagestad and Grant Heffernan. After the Monkeys tied the game, the Raiders regained the lead on Freeman's goal. Jack Lansford stopped numerous shots in goal for the Raiders, while Francis Krahe, Ryan Hultman, Russell Goldberg and Casey Adamczyc anchored the defense.
