Camden Nicholson's second goal of the game, coming on a penalty kick, proved the difference as the Silver Bullets came back from a 2-1 deficit to beat the Fire Powers, 3-2, in an AYSO Region 57 Boys under-12 soccer game. Ori Tabak's goal tied the game at 2 before Nicholson scored the game-winner. The Fire Powers took a 2-1 lead in the third quarter when the Silver Bullets were down one player, but the Silver Bullets kept it close from the solid play of goalie Connor Benvenuti, Scott Berkhausen and Alex Mainthow.

A last-minute goal on a corner kick from midfielder Jared Rivera-Ashley allowed the Hot Lava of AYSO Region 57 boys under-14 soccer team to beat the Silver Slammers, 3-2. George Logan scored the Lava's first two goals on identical shots as Geoffrey Grant made assists on both Logan goals. Goalies Ryan Hultman and Andrew Hawkins stopped numerous shots on goal while the defense of Matt Rhodes, Ricky Lobel, Andrew Martinez, Nick Booth and Kyle Tomlin contained the Slammers with sustained pressure throughout both halves.

When Sage Hill School girls' volleyball coach Dan Thomassen compares his star outside hitter Kekai Whitford to Bo Jackson, there is admittedly a bit of a disconnect. Jackson was known for being a freak athlete, a two-sport star in professional baseball and football in the late 1980s. He was also known for being unstoppable as a running back in the "Tecmo Super Bowl" video game, as well as for making Nike a lot of money with his cross-trainer shoes and famous "Bo Knows" commercials.

The Newport Knockouts answered a 2-0 deficit and pulled out a 3-2 win over the Costa Mesa Sudden Death in AYSO Region 97 Girls under-16 APP Plus action at Harper Community Center Sunday. Debbie Yoder-Lee scored the game-winner off an indirect kick for the Knockouts. Costa Mesa opened the game with an aggressive attack which led to its 2-0 lead. However, the Knockouts regrouped and started their comeback with a well-placed goal by Kelsea Dunn. Then, Maloire McMains evened the score with a highlight-type long shot for a goal.

The Slammin' Smurfs scored five unanswered goals after the Bruisers opened up a 1-0 lead and won their boys under-14 Region 97 soccer game Saturday, 5-1. Ben Swift and Will Reichenstein each scored two goals for the Bruisers as Andrew Kaban scored on a cross pass from Edgar Torres. Brandon Rowley, Jordon Hovis, Torres, Christopher Gutierrez and David Garrett played strong defense, keeping the ball in the Smurf's offensive area most of the game as Rex Nelson, Tommy Olson, Phil Garrett and Kyle Fults took shots on goal.

Newport Beach's boys under-16 soccer team received two goals each from Jake Kalwitz and Isai Viveros to spur a 5-2 victory over the South Irvine Flowers in AYSO Region 97 action last Saturday. Sergio Rodriguez added another to cap the scoring for Newport. Benjamin Pepic narrowly missed the goal from 18 yards out in the final seconds. David Garrett made some strong crosses with P.J. Baca controlling the midfield. Chris Lewis, Edgar Torres, Junior Rubio and Justin Whisler turned away several Irvine offensive attacks.

Brian Siemonsma scored the only goal 15 minutes into the second half and the Boys under-13 AYSO Pacific Soccer Club Newport bronze team narrowly defeated the San Juan Capistrano Titans, 1-0, in Region 97 action. The win improves the Pacific Soccer club to 5-1-1 on the season. Garrett Heiser, Denny Perdomo and Adrian Buonanoce kept the attack going and Josh Jacobs, Julian Hernandez, Calvin Jhunjhuwala, Andrew Wilson, Nick Sheffield and Jeremy Anish were steady at midfield.

Two second-half goals by the Silver Bullets snapped a 1-1 halfime tie and propelled them to a 3-1 victory over the Dirty Dozen in boys under-12 AYSO Region 57 youth soccer action. Camden Nicholson and Ori Tabak each scored one goal in the second half. Tommy Bangert, Scott Berkhausen, Jamie Heinecke and Alex Mainthow played solid for the Bullets. Bullets' goalkeeper Connor Benvenuti stopped five scoring chances by the Dirty Dozen to preserve the win. Kevin Corrigan, Anthony Francisco, Jonathan Jaffee and Kumi Chehabi helped in the win. In Girls under-12 play: The Blue Crush won its game Saturday, 4-1, with Megan Gaal and Amanda Johnson each scoring goals and Laura Kopel added two more scores on assists by Megan Wilson and Bryn Hastings.

SOCCER AYSO Region 120 Girls under 14 Costa Mesa Code Red 3, CdM 0 : Code Red displayed solid defense from first-half goalie Hayley Smith and fullbacks Jenna Nava, Sydney Caffey, Jessica Oseguera and Jillian Tanner. Brooke Wanbaugh scored Costa Mesa's first goal, and Vanessa Corona scored twice. Girls under 10 Red Warriors 1, Fast & Furious 0: Red Warriors forward Olivia LeValley scored the only goal, after teammate Steffani Nava's shot had hit the post.

SOCCER AYSO Region 97 Girls under 14 Green Lightning 5, CDM 0: Gigi Light scored the first goal for the Green Lightning with an assist by Tamara Myers, who scored the second goal. Michelle Brookes and Megan Farley had two steals each. Rochelle Bowlin and Page Keys also scored. Monika Peterson, Kaelyn Kuenli, Lauren Steinke and Janet Zelpa combined to keep the ball out of the backfield and up toward the net. On defense, Andrea O’Campo, Hannah Beek and Paige Bell-Wheelan had stellar performances to keep CDM scoreless.
