With "Blue Crush," director John Stockwell provides the end-of-summer thrill ride everyone needs, no matter what coast you live on. Even this Oklahoma-grown girl was mesmerized by the genuine excitement that only God can provide in the 30-to 40-foot waves captured by this summer fantasy flick that nicely delivered and wasn't overdone.

Three goals by Debbie Yoder-Lee, two by Malorie McMains and one goal by Carrie Cabanillas carried the Newport Beach Girls under-15 AYSO Region 97 soccer team to a 6-0 win over Sudden Death at Harper School Sunday. Goalkeeper Madison Urtusuastegui played solid as well. In Girls under-12 action: Red Crush 8, Blue Crush 2 A scoring outburst by Kalya Henrie (four goals) and Valentina Buonanoce (three goals) helped the Red Crush defeat the Blue Crush.

Madison Wooters scored twice to lead the Newport Beach Gold select team to a 5-1 win over Irvine in the Area Q spring playoffs May 8 in AYSO Region 97 girls under-10 play. Madison Grant, Meaghan Kay and Josie Jogwe each had goals for Newport. Allison Schelin, Sophia Evans and Nicole Dinatale had assists while Delaney Bell anchored the defense. In other under-10 select action: Newport 4, Corona del Mar 3: Dinatale tallied three goals and Jogwe put in another to lead Newport in the afternoon match May 8. Schelin and Wooters had assists as Evans, Bell, Grant and Kay provided defensive support.

Jimmy Bueno scored two goals and Mike Wolfe netted one, as the duo helped lead Costa Mesa United to a 3-1 victory over South Irvine in boys under-16 action in AYSO Region 120 play. Wolfe scored the first goal to give his team a 1-0 lead. Bueno, Jon Secrest and Edgar Amador maintained the lead with consistent passing. Goalie Zack Shockley led the Mesa defense, while Chris Ray supported. In Girls Under-14 action: Twisted Chaos 3, Blue Crush 2 After Jaye Hellmich sent a booming kick that covered half of the field, forward Samantha Strodel gathered it and took it all the way to net the game-winner for Twisted Chaos in the fourth quarter.

Cynthia Bui scored a late first-half goal off a throw-in from Hailey McCarter and the Corona del Mar under-14 girls Silver Select soccer team made it stand with a 1-0 victory over host Mission Viejo in AYSO Region 57 play Saturday. CdM goalkeeper Gelyne Prow notched her second shutout of the spring season with help from defenders Sarah Wesley, Abby Carrier, Taylor Rhodes and Su-Yin Bickner. Midfielders Shaye Bastien, Alexandra Reinach, Danielle Reinach and Brittany Donahue, along with forward Michelle Zucker, combined to maintain CdM's attack.

The Breakers shut out the Goblins, 2-0, under the lights at Lions Park to advance to the final in girls under-10 AYSO Region 97 soccer playoff action Monday. In the middle of the first half, goalkeeper Christina Young punted the ball to forward Casey Duckworth, who worked the ball downfield to score, giving the Breakers a 1-0 halftime lead. The Breakers stacked defenders on the center line in the second half to keep ball on the Goblins' side. Early in the second half, Breakers goalkeeper Meaghan Kay punted over the defenders.

Two goals apiece by Camden Nicholson and Ori Tabak helped the Silver Bullets to a 4-0 soccer win in the opening round of the playoffs over the Mooners in Boys under-12 AYSO Region 57. Koomi Chehabi had an assist on one of Nicholson's goals and Jamie Heinecke, Alex Mainthow, Scott Berkhausen, Jarrett Logan and Anthony Francisco and goalie Connor Benvenuti all played solid. Midfielders Tommy Bangert, Kevin Corrigan and Jonathan Jaffee kept the pressure on. In Boys under-10 action: Team USA 3, Green Grenades 0 Three different players scored for Team USA as they shut out the Green Grenades.

AYSO Region 97 Boys Under 14 Newport Beach Lucky Charms 6, Corona del Mar No. 1 2: The Lucky Charms exploded on offense scoring six goals. Mason Murphey and Adam Kinder both scored two goals with Kyle Regan and Abner Viveros each scoring one. Solid defense was led by Connor Moore, Parker Joyce, Edwin Collindres and Chase Crowell. Eric Rosales played well at the goalkeeper position and Bobby Swift and Zane Torre controlled the midfield. Tanner Barrett was injured but added moral support from the sideline.

Will Reichenstein tallied two goals and an assist to lead the Slammin' Smurfs to a four-goal win over the Beach Bums Saturday at Kaiser School in Costa Mesa in boys under-14 soccer action. The Smurfs used accurate passes to score goals, getting contributions from several players, including Branden Rowley, Chris Gutierrez, Andrew Kaban and Kyle Caldwell, who all scored one goal in the Region 97 duel. Caldwell and Kaban assisted on Reichenstein's two goals.

The Newport Strikers' defense shut out San Juan in AYSO Region 97 Girls under-13 APP Plus soccer play. Andrea Aqueveque scored the lone goal on a pass from Cassidy Gayner. Midfielders Alice Cope, Monique Gallardo, Kristina Heimstaedt, Claire Josephson and Lyndsi Lewan pushed the ball toward the forwards. Strong defense was provided by Sarah Cope, Kelly De Young, Lily Dierkes, Stephanie Nealey, Tia Shefflette and keeper Maddy McMains. Brittany Sowers played at third striker.
