The Nightmares, an AYSO Region 97 girls under 12 soccer team, defeated the Blue Angels, 2-0, in the division championship on Saturday. Lily Dierkes scored both goals for the Nightmares on assists from Rachel Foster and Bridget Gleason. In goal, the Nightmares were led by Clea O'Kieffe and Jena Riggio, while Elizabeth Wheeler, Karli Kuhns and Kelly Morrison sparked the defense. Strong all-around play was turned in by Alyssa Martin, Krysten White, Shaina Giffing, Krista Campbell, Marie Kapelke and Claire Twena.

Whether you?re a young pro looking for a ride to the mountains or a beginner looking for some lessons, Newport Beach?s Blue Angels Youth Ski and Snowboard Program gives kids a chance to enjoy the too-short snow season. Starting Saturday, boys and girls ages 7 to 16 have a chance to visit Mountain High Resort and hit the slopes. For five Saturdays, Jan. 26, Feb. 2, Feb. 9, Feb. 23 and March 1, kids can take a luxury bus to Mountain High and get five days of professional ski or snowboarding coaching, a ProTec snow helmet, lunch and a Billabong sponsor bag. Program enrollment is $749.

COSTA MESA - Eddie Tomasek, Anthony Lucero and Ricky Condoya each scored goals for the Royals in their 3-1 playoffs win Saturday in AYSO Region 120 Under-10 boys action. Benjamin Briseno, Jacob Hurd, Nicholas Arellanes, Austin Rice, Eric Petersen, Morgan Brennan, Roland Wood and Christopher Quinlan were all solid on defense and goalie Zach Arant held off a strong Falcons' attack to preserve the win. In other Under-10 boys action: Rockets 3, Cheetahs 1 - Jonathan Knauer scored two goals and Andrew Roth added another for the Rockets.

Three goals by Debbie Yoder-Lee, two by Malorie McMains and one goal by Carrie Cabanillas carried the Newport Beach Girls under-15 AYSO Region 97 soccer team to a 6-0 win over Sudden Death at Harper School Sunday. Goalkeeper Madison Urtusuastegui played solid as well. In Girls under-12 action: Red Crush 8, Blue Crush 2 A scoring outburst by Kalya Henrie (four goals) and Valentina Buonanoce (three goals) helped the Red Crush defeat the Blue Crush.

COSTA MESA - The Teenie Wahines of the AYSO Region 97,Division 6 girls team were led offensively with goals by Sayde Busby, Ashley Svendsen, and Lindsay Anderson. Assists were given out by Jordan Murrel, Hannah MacLeod and Jessica Swift and also helping guide the offense was the play of Kimberly Ficenec and Lauren Pfeiffer. Blakely Ficenec controlled the midfield area, while Cassie D'Cruz and Skylar Hanson played solid defense for the Teenie Wahines.

One bedroom in Patrick Glasgow’s Newport Beach home is filled with faded photographs and postcards from his father, who died more than 50 years ago when the F-11 Tiger he was piloting crashed on an Alabama beach. One black-and-white picture shows a grinning, young pilot in a flight suit, with his hands on his hips, standing in front of a Navy jet. Glasgow’s family will get his father’s battered dog tags and a tarnished metal emblem from his father’s former fighter squadron back later this month after an Alabama woman found the items on the beach near her home, half a century later.

Meet Erick Ortiz and Alejandro Rodriguez, the two toughest boys at Wilson Elementary School. They may be on the slender side. They may not sport tattoos or wrestle alligators. But last week, they accomplished a feat that none of their male classmates did. They got up and performed on stage. For the past three years, Wilson has capped the final week of school with a fourth- and fifth-grade talent show. On Tuesday, the multipurpose room rocked with singers, dancers and even a poet and a pianist.

A hat trick by Jonathan Gordon, a single goal from Tobin Olson and stellar goaltending from Juan Trujillo netted The Who a 4-2 win over Costa Mesa in Region 97 boys under-14 action. Timothy Regan, Christian Harrison and Michael Perkins played strong defense as did sweeper Brandon Parole. Midfield play was provided by Vinnie Finn and Nick Normandin as Travis Kuhns provided additional offensive support. In boys under-12 play: Hurricanes 1, Panthers 1 Defense shined as both the Hurricanes and Panthers played to a tie. The Panthers scored first, but the Hurricanes answered right back with a goal by Robby Hampton off a pass from Easton Giedt.

The Slammin' Smurfs scored five unanswered goals after the Bruisers opened up a 1-0 lead and won their boys under-14 Region 97 soccer game Saturday, 5-1. Ben Swift and Will Reichenstein each scored two goals for the Bruisers as Andrew Kaban scored on a cross pass from Edgar Torres. Brandon Rowley, Jordon Hovis, Torres, Christopher Gutierrez and David Garrett played strong defense, keeping the ball in the Smurf's offensive area most of the game as Rex Nelson, Tommy Olson, Phil Garrett and Kyle Fults took shots on goal.

The Breakers scored three more times in the second half, getting two goals from Kirsten Rohan and one from Taury Hlinka. Sarah Dailey, Kelsey Long, Katherine Maddox, Hannah Nance and Paige Tennison shared forward and midfield positions, taking many shots on goal.

NEWPORT BEACH - The Red Raiders and Blue Devils played to a 2-2 draw on Oct. 9, in AYSO Region 57 boys under 12 soccer action. Peter Fankuchen and Paul Bioche each scored for the Blue Devils to tie the game. For the Red Bombers, Nick Freeman and Andy Rovzar scored goals, while Ford Noe left the game with a broken arm. A strong Blue Devils' defense, led by Geoffrey Grant, Mike Brusic, Omeed Alipour and Andrew Garten, held the Red Raiders back. Parker Rhodes and David Grant used solid ball-handling to spark the Blue Devils' comeback.
