HUNTINGTON BEACH ? Edison High's hitters had a tough time penetrating the Newport Harbor High boys' volleyball team's defense on Monday night. The Sailors, not known as a dominant blocking team, were stellar at the net, tallying eight blocks in their 25-15, 22-25, 15-10 victory over the Chargers in the title game of the Orange County Championships at Edison High School. It marked Newport Harbor's first Orange County Championships title since 2002 and the first for this group of players.

It's been a year of great success, yet of overwhelming loss for Tiger Woods. On Saturday, Woods, who has won six straight PGA Tour events amid dealing with the loss of his father, Earl, to cancer in May, will try to have some fun. He will host his second annual Block Party at The Grove of Anaheim. Part of the festivities will be at Mesa Verde Country Club. However, it will be closed to the public. Only those who purchased tickets for the benefit will be able to attend.The block party is to raise funds for the Tiger Woods Learning Center, a 14-acre, youth-education facility in Anaheim.

His return to his part-time residence this time will no doubt prove another thrill, but this time it will be off the golf course. In June, Woods was prepping for the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. He was at home the week before, working out at a local gym to ready himself for the nation’s championship. He won the tournament in a playoff over Rocco Mediate, playing with torn knee ligaments and fractures in the same leg. It was one of the most captivating major championships in the history of the sport.

He is arguably the world’s most recognizable athletic star; an American phenomenon. Last week at the block party, one woman railed on another expressing her discontent with how her neighbor's table had been set up. This started a yelling match that sucked in several other neighbors. Feelings were hurt. People were talking. Things got blown out of proportion. We started the neighborhood meeting this week with a review of our agreed upon shared values: security, cleanliness, respect, community sharing and justice.

It was a block party with a very special silver lining. An Olympic silver medal lining to be exact. On Monday evening, on a quiet cul de sac in Costa Mesa, neighbors, friends, admirers and fans of 2012 Olympic silver medalists April Ross-Keenan and Jen Kessy along with their coach Jeff Conover came together to celebrate victory, taking over the massive rear yard of hosts Gary and Sherry Rorden's home in good, old-fashioned, neighborhood...

I am not sure what the view from the mesa is this week because I am overwhelmed by laundry and homework. The dog needs her shots, the car needs to be washed, and all I want to do is sit on my cluttered patio to finish the novel I have been "almost done" with for a week. My head is down in my own little world. I know a man died in our community this week, and it seems like I should care about that. A friend sent me a text from the Costa Mesa City Council meeting this week and I felt a twinge of guilt for not being there.

My neighborhood held its annual Easter egg hunt Sunday, just as it has for the 25 years I’ve lived here. The agenda was pretty much as it has always been, only the faces had changed. The hard-core veterans who have lived here as long or longer than I have still run the show. But young families are moving in and putting down roots and preparing for heavier duties. And a new generation of small people is learning how to get inside the heads of the people hiding the eggs — especially eggs with money in them.
