Brett Smith, a junior on the UC Irvine baseball team, has been named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. He secured the honor after tying a career-high 10 strikeouts to lead the Anteaters to a 3-0 win over Minnesota March 18. Smith pitched 8 2/3 innings and was a batter shy of picking up his first complete game of the season. He struck out Minnesota's first four batters and went on to face three over the minimum through eight innings.

IRVINE -- UC Irvine's baseball team closed out its first homestand of the season with a 6-4 win over Loyola Marymount on Tuesday night. Brock Bardeen drove in two runs for the Anteaters (3-1), who open a three-game series Friday at Hawaii. Blair Erickson pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his second save of the year. UCI took the lead for good in the sixth inning after Loyola Marymount (1-3) tied the score at 4-4. Taylor Holiday led off with a single and Cody Cipriano was hit by a pitch one out later.

IRVINE ? Jaime Martinez's two-run single in the eighth inning gave UC Irvine's baseball team a 5-4 nonconference victory over Sacramento State on Saturday. Blair Erickson pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his sixth save of the season and 33rd of his career. The junior is one save away from tying former Cal State Fullerton star Chad Cordero for second place on the all-time Big West Conference save list. Kyle Necke picked up his first win of the season for UCI (11-6). Dylan Axelrod pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

IRVINE ? The UC Irvine baseball team survived a ninth-inning grand slam by pinch hitter Carter McQuigg and defeated Oral Roberts, 9-8, in the second game of a three-game series at Anteater Ballpark on Friday night. UC Irvine (16-9) took a 9-4 lead into the ninth inning when McQuigg hit his blast off reliever Kyle Necke. Blair Erickson came on to get the last out to record his eighth save of the season and 35th of his career. Cody Cipriano led the offensive charge by going 3 for 5 with three RBIs.

TUCSON, Ariz. ? The UC Irvine baseball team scored six runs in the eighth inning to extend a 1-0 lead and earn a 7-1 nonconference victory over Arizona in the second game of a two-game series on Sunday. Taylor Holiday and Jaime Martinez had two RBIs apiece for the Anteaters (18-10), whose three pitchers were all effective. Starter Scott Gorgen threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and striking out five, while Glenn Swanson struck out three in 1 1/3 relief innings to get the win. Blair Erickson worked the final three innings for his ninth save this season.

STOCKTON — UC Irvine senior closer Blair Erickson struck out the first hitter he faced to end the eighth inning and strand two Pacific runners on base. He then fanned two in a scoreless ninth to save the Anteaters' 4-3 Big West Conference baseball win at UOP Saturday. It was the first save since April 17 for the NCAA career saves leader (52), who helped starter Wes Etheridge claim his 10th win of the campaign. The victory also gave No. 13-ranked UCI (33-14-1, 9-5 in conference)

UCI's DEPAUL HONORED UC Irvine freshman Lyndsay DePaul, who won the 200-yard individual medley, the 400 IM and the 200 butterfly at last week's Big West Conference Championships, was named Female Swimmer of the Year in the conference. In addition, she has been named National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week by CollegeSwimming.com. DePaul also contributed to the Anteaters' winning 200 medley relay to help UCI finish third in the team standings at Belmont Plaza. Her time in the 400 IM (4 minutes, 14.25 seconds)

A bases-loaded throwing error in the bottom of the ninth by the UC Irvine baseball team allowed the game-winning run to cross for the second time in as many days as the visiting Anteaters lost to Clemson, 5-4, in a nonconference game Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. In the ninth, Tiger second baseman Taylor Harbin hit a one-out double and advanced to third on a wild pitch by reliever Steve Schroer. UCI (6-4) intentionally walked the next two batters, bringing up Tyler Colvin to face sophomore Blair Erickson.

BASEBALL UC Irvine 6, Washington 3 SEATTLE — Four Anteaters pitchers held the Huskies hitless through eight innings in the deciding game of a three-game nonconference series completed Sunday at Husky Ballpark. Starter Reid Suitor went five innings, walking four and striking out three, to improve to 3-0 and give the Anteaters (12-4-1) their fourth straight weekend series victory. Chris Lopez, Thomas Calahan and Eric Pettis combined for three hitless innings, before Andy Lentz tripled in the ninth off Blair Erickson to ruin the no-hit bid. Erickson surrendered one earned run, but closed out the win, which dropped Washington to 2-8. Ben Orloff went three for five with a double, the fourth extra-base hit for the UCI sophomore shortstop who did not have an extra-base hit last season.
