Steve Virgen There was a mountain before them, even before the tip-off. And, so they started to climb. The Estancia High Eagles faced great odds, and yet made progress early in their second round CIF Southern Section Division III-A playoff game at Bishop Montgomery. The Estancia boys basketball team earned an 8-2 lead with 5:30 remaining in the first half, but then the avalanche came. The Eagles went scoreless over the next 10 minutes, and the Knights, the division's No. 1 seed, went on a 22-0 run, that featured nine straight points in the first 90 seconds of the second quarter.

Seniors Carlos Jaime and Eli Solis paced Mesa with eight kills apiece, but Sorrells said the Knights controlled the pace of the match. The longest game in Bill Christiansen’s 27 years coaching girls’ volleyball also marked the end of his Corona del Mar High career. Christiansen resigned Tuesday, ending a successful 12-year relationship with the Sea Kings, the last seven as the girls’ head coach in which he won a CIF Southern Section Division III-A title and led the school twice to section runner-up finishes. At 53, Christiansen said he plans to spend more time with his two children and family, but he didn’t rule out returning to another school after taking a year off. “I had an idea I would,” Christiansen said of stepping down after CdM lost a five-game thriller on Nov. 20 that included a 38-36 Game 3 at Cathedral Catholic of San Diego in the opening round of the CIF State Division III Southern California Regional playoffs.

NEWPORT BEACH — When the Newport Harbor High girls’ volleyball team faced Mira Costa last month at the Durango Tournament in Las Vegas, it became one of just four schools this year to actually manage to win a game against the Mustangs. Still, that’s the closest anybody has come to beating top-seeded Mira Costa (28-0), the top-ranked team in the country, according to MaxPreps.com. Despite losing National Player of the Year Alex Klineman, now starting for Stanford, and Coach Daelea Aldrich, the 2006 CIF Division I-AA state champions have hardly missed a step.

Not a good time to fool around with the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs Tuesday. Then more confusion for Rowland, the rotation went astray. Seconds after Estancia returned from a timeout, Coach Aimee Urbien called a timeout to rearrange her Raiders.
