RIVERSIDE - Just because UC Irvine men's basketball coach Russell Turner elected not to play starting big men Will Davis and Mamadou Ndiaye didn't mean the Anteaters gave anything less than their "Best" effort Saturday night. Mike Best, a 6-foot- 10 sophomore who along with 6-10 junior John Ryan replaced the aforementioned standouts in the starting lineup for the first time all season, had nine points, nine rebounds and five blocks to help the visiting Anteaters handle UC Riverside, 72-52, in a Big West Conference clash at the Student Recreation Center.

LONG BEACH — The Big West Conference championship torch wasn't exactly passed Thursday night, but the UC Irvine men's basketball team effectively nudged it from its familiar resting place at the Walter Pyramid. UCI held on for a 46-44 conference-opening victory over host Long Beach State, which has captured the previous three Big West regular-season titles. Mamadou Ndiaye, UCI's 7-foot-6 center dunked an entry pass from Travis Souza with 2:07 left to put UCI up, 45-42, and sophomore Mike Best sank the first of a one-and-one free-throw situation with nine seconds remaining to give the visitors (10-7)

By winning its fourth Big West Conference regular-season title in six years, the UC Irvine men's soccer team officially rendered the 2012 season the anomaly Coach George Kuntz believed it to be all along. Championship play, including three conference tournament titles and recurring trips to the NCAA Tournament, are perennially the norm for these Anteaters, who came from behind to defeat Cal State Northridge, 2-1, to end the regular season on Saturday night. With the win UCI, ranked No. 25 by Top Drawer Soccer, improved to 12-4-3.

When you have the kind of year the UC Irvine women's basketball team did last season, looking back is hardly advisable. But when it comes to envisioning a brighter future, second-year coach Doug Oliver also doesn't want his players looking over their shoulders. So, Oliver has effectively issued a universal green light to bombard the basket with shots this season, hoping to improve upon a woeful offensive output in 2012-13, when the Anteaters were 9-21, 5-13 in the Big West Conference and failed to qualify for the eight-team Big West Conference tournament that began in their own arena.

The tears welling in the eyes of UC Irvine defender Jordan Bruce had nothing to do with the first goal of her collegiate career. Instead, Bruce and her Anteaters, dominant yet still doomed, were writhing as a result of their 2-1 Big West Conference loss to visiting Long Beach State on Thursday night. "It's the sport we play," UCI Coach Scott Juniper said. "You can dominate a game and lose. I don't think that happens in any other sport that you can dominate a game to that degree, literally in every department.
