Amara Aguilar BREN EVENTS CENTER - There were no last-minute rallies this time. No game-winning shots. No falling behind by large margins in the second half. In fact, the Anteaters didn't trail at all after the break and led by as many as 25 points en route to a 72-53 victory over UC Riverside in a Big West Conference men's basketball game Saturday night. Blowouts have not been the norm at home for the Anteaters (10-4, 3-0 in the Big West).

Freshman Christen D'Alessandro stole an inbounds pass near midcourt with less than five seconds remaining to help the Orange Coast College women's basketball team open the season with a 60-59 victory over Solano in the first round of the Mt. San Antonio tournament Friday. Sophomore forward Rhondi Naff, a former Costa Mesa High standout, scored a game-high 24 points while teammate Lauren Stepanski added 11 for Coast, which faces either defending state champion Mt. Brian Pajer is no longer his own visual aid. When it came to discussing the history of the UC Irvine men's swim program, Pajer, in his third season as both men's and women's coach, could merely point to his chest to identify the last UCI men's swimmer to qualify for the NCAA championships (as a senior in 1990). But after the Anteaters claimed their first Big West Conference men's swimming and diving title Saturday, with the completion of the four-day event at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Pajer can now point with pride to seniors Eric Reilly and Dan Simenson, as well as juniors Randall Tom and Eddie Erazo, as those who have earned the same distinction.

IRVINE — After sinking a driving layup with 14 seconds left to cap an improbable comeback Saturday, UC Irvine guard Chuma Awaji repeatedly rapped his right fist against his chest. It was as if to emphasize that he had enough heart to single-handedly help the Anteaters avoid defeat against Big West Conference men's basketball rival Cal State Fullerton. But in a matter of seconds, Awaji's heart, as well as that of the rest of the UCI partisans among the 2,826 at the Bren Events Center, sank as one when Frank Robinson netted a game-winning three-pointer with one second left.

ANAHEIM -- One day after erasing an 18-point first-half deficit, the UC Irvine men's basketball team proved it could build and even extend an early advantage of its own Thursday night. The No. 5-seeded Anteaters seized a 22-9 lead on the way to a 28-18 first-half advantage and held on for 70-52 victory over No. 4-seeded UC Santa Barbara in the quarterfinals of the Big West Conference men's basketball tournament at the Anaheim Convention Center. The Anteaters (15-17) will meet top-seeded Long Beach State (22-7)

BREN EVENTS CENTER -- Contrary to the more familiar quotation attributed to Leo Durocher, nice guys also finish fifth. Greg Ethington, UC Irvine's lone senior, who is noted among his teammates and coaches for his consistent geniality, made sure the Anteaters did exactly that in the Big West Conference men's basketball race this week. The 6-foot-8 center followed his first double-double of the season in Thursday's home win over UC Santa Barbara with 21 points, 10 rebounds and at least double-figure ovations, to pace a 79-49 conference victory over visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday before 2,046 on Senior Night.

Richard Dunn BREN EVENTS CENTER - In the form of payback, Utah State University's Aggies thwarted another UC Irvine celebration in the final seconds of a Big West Conference men's basketball thriller. With Utah State's Brennan Ray sticking closely to UCI All-American candidate Jerry Green on the game's last play, the Aggies' defense forced him to pass to an open Mike Hood, whose three-point attempt kissed the back of the rim and bounced free as Coach Stew Morrill's Aggies held on to defeat UCI, 62-61, before an Anteater homecoming crowd of 5,150.

Amara Aguilar Defending UC Irvine's 7-foot sophomore center Adam Parada isn't easy, but Utah State rose to the challenge in a Big West Conference men's basketball game Saturday night at the Bren Events Center. The Aggies, whose tallest player is 6-9, held Parada scoreless in the first half and took a 16-point lead at the break. Utah State went on to win, 62-61, after the Anteaters (17-7, 10-3 in the Big West) couldn't sink an outside shot in their final two possessions.

At 7-7, the UC Irvine men's basketball team is breaking even. It took overtime, of course, to produce the Anteaters' seventh victory of the season on Saturday, and "even" may be the theme in the Big West Conference, which tipped off with five games Saturday. Four games among Big West rivals were decided by 10 or fewer points on Saturday, with the lone exception being UCI's 68-57 overtime conquest of visiting UC Davis, which managed just one field goal in the final 10:33 of action, including a scoreless overtime session.
