At 7-7, the UC Irvine men's basketball team is breaking even. It took overtime, of course, to produce the Anteaters' seventh victory of the season on Saturday, and "even" may be the theme in the Big West Conference, which tipped off with five games Saturday. Four games among Big West rivals were decided by 10 or fewer points on Saturday, with the lone exception being UCI's 68-57 overtime conquest of visiting UC Davis, which managed just one field goal in the final 10:33 of action, including a scoreless overtime session.

With the UC Irvine baseball team this season, Moore has meant less for opposing hitters. Anteaters junior closer Sam Moore nailed down his nation-leading 15th save Saturday to help UCI claim a 5-4 Big West Conference victory over visiting Cal State Northridge. It was the fourth consecutive conference game that Moore has saved for UCI and the 6-foot-1, 200-pound right-hander has not blown a save opportunity this season. Moore got the final five outs Saturday, the 10th time he has pitched more than one inning to collect a save, and continues to defy the odds, as well as hitters, by collecting outs without big-time velocity.

A baseball adage as old as wool uniforms states that the breaks of the game, the highs and lows, the hot and cold stretches, all even out over the course of a season. UC Irvine junior first baseman Connor Spencer can, thank goodness, finally attest to just that. After beginning the season hitless in his first 19 at-bats, the 2013 Big West Conference batting champion has righted himself. He is 11 for 16 over his last four games, including a two-for-four performance Saturday to lead the Anteaters to a 4-2 win over visiting UC Riverside.

ANAHEIM - This was not the kind of history UC Irvine had in mind. But for the first time in 39 Big West Conference men's basketball tournaments, the Anteaters became the first No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 7 seed. The 61-58 setback to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo ended the Anteaters' hopes of making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. UCI (23-11), will instead compete in the National Invitational Tournament for the first time since 2002. Information on UCI's NIT pairing will be available Sunday or Monday, a UCI athletic department spokesperson said.

ANAHEIM - The six remaining seniors in uniform for the UC Irvine women's basketball team played their final three games in socks that displayed the skyline of their native region. It was a fitting gesture for an Anteaters' team that played, by any measure, well above the clouds all season long. The Anteaters (17-15), picked to finish eighth in the nine-team Big West Conference, fell to top-seeded Cal State Northridge, 78-60, in the semifinals of the conference tournament on Friday at Honda Center.
