The Irvine Ranch Conservancy led a volunteer event to help with the planting of native species in Big Canyon on Saturday. The work comes as part of an ongoing habitat and trail enhancement project being conducted in the area on behalf of Newport Beach, said Riley Pratt, the project manager for the conservancy. The contract was awarded by the city in the late summer, Pratt said. During past events, volunteers helped remove invasive species like ice plant. The project will also include trail improvements and increased signage.

Three Newport Beach firefighters injured while battling a fire in a decorative chimney facade have been released from the hospital, authorities said Tuesday. Firefighters responded to a fire in Big Canyon on Rue Deauville about 7:39 p.m. Monday, the Newport Beach Fire Department said in a news release. Firefighters tried to put out the blaze as it moved to the walls and attic outside the chimney case. They ventilated the roof to help extinguish the blaze. The fire was put out in about 20 minutes, the release said.

It takes a lot to knock down a 220-pound former farmer. Bruce Roberts, a tough-talking Costa Mesa man who used to hunt and trap, and his Boston terrier, Bones, were ambushed Saturday by three coyotes. The man and his dog were taking their early-morning walk in West Newport near West Coast Highway when three coyotes stalked them from behind and pounced on Bones, toppling Roberts in the process, he said. While Bones survived the mauling by the coyotes, in which he required 16 stitches, the experience shook up Roberts — and he's not the only one. Residents in Big Canyon, a gated community on the other side of Newport, have also complained to city and state officials recently about seemingly more aggressive coyotes.

NEWPORT BEACH - For a guy who never played Big Canyon Country Club before this week, Bhavik Patel sure made the 113th Southern California Golf Assn. Amateur Championship look easy. The 21-year-old Bakersfield resident capped an impressive three days of golf with his fourth straight under-par round to finish the championship at nine-under (71-71-67-70 - 279), an eight-shot victory over Xander Schauffele of San Diego (68-71-74-74 - 287). Patel was solid as a house built on rock, with no bogeys in his final two rounds.

June Casagrande NEWPORT BEACH -- In response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, city officials have added a number of security measures at Big Canyon Reservoir. "We don't like to publicize the specifics of what's been done there, but, absolutely, there are some greatly increased security measures," City Manager Homer Bludau said. "Based upon those measures, we have caught some people who have gained unauthorized access to the area." Bludau said the people caught in the restricted area near the reservoir were skateboarders and that there was no indication that the intruders posed any threat to public safety.

One stroke. That was all that kept Mesa Verde Country Club from repeating as Jones Cup champion last year. But Tom Sargent, Chris Gilley, Dave Tanchuk, Madelaine Campbell and Ryan Gale are ready to regain their title in the ninth annual Jones Cup on Tuesday at Newport Beach Country Club. Despite last year’s loss being by such a small margin, the team has not lost any confidence and even gained a little boost. “We’re gonna whip ‘em,” Sargent, Mesa Verde’s head pro and team captain, said of his expectations for this year’s Jones Cup. With a little cynicism in his voice Sargent wants to top Big Canyon and establish his team as the best in the tournament.

NEWPORT BEACH - What little breathing room there was for competitors during the first 36 holes of the 113th Southern California Golf Assn. Amateur championship, Xander Schauffele bottled enough to sustain him all the way to the top of the leaderboard. Big Canyon Country Club rendered some sweaty, exhausted faces as the sun set Friday evening, with only six of 80-plus players finishing the first two rounds under par. Schauffele, who transferred to San Diego State from Long Beach, bolted to a four-under-68 on his first 18 and followed with a one-under 71 on the afternoon round to take a three-shot lead over 2011 California Amateur champion Bhavik Patel (71-71 - 142)

It would seem easy, or refreshing, to write a story about Mike Carpenter and provide the impression that he stumbled upon the game of golf. But that would be unfair to his persona and to the reason he continues to play. To put it simply, Carpenter is a competitor. From tee to green, he displays a strong competitive spirit that was seen on the basketball court while growing up in Laguna Beach. Carpenter played basketball at Santa Margarita High. Hoops was his world back then, but he still had time for fun with golf too. He said his parents were members at Big Canyon Country Club, and Carpenter also played there.

A residence formerly owned by John Wayne in the Big Canyon area of Newport Beach is for sale for nearly $4 million. It underwent a major redesign recently, but several elements original to the time Wayne owned the property remained throughout the roughly 4,500-square-foot home, such as the dentil moldings in the high-ceilinged living room, the shelving in the former library and the door handles, plated in nickel silver, in the dining room....

SANTA ANA - What did the five golfers representing Mesa Verde Country Club on Wednesday at the 14th annual Jones Cup have in common with ornithologists? Both thoroughly lament the birdies that got away. Mesa Verde missed five birdie putts at or inside 10 feet and it turned no fewer than 20 missed birdie putts into tap-in pars to finish nine-under-par 63 in the two-best-ball format at Santa Ana Country Club. Big Canyon Country Club won the event at 11 under to capture its third straight crown and nine out of 14 overall.

SANTA ANA - Last year it was Mike Carpenter's 25-foot eagle putt that proved to be a memorable, heroic shot for Big Canyon Country Club's Jones Cup victory. This year, it was head pro Robert Pang who stepped up with the seemingly improbable theatrics at the 14th annual Jones Cup Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club. Pang rebounded from a drive on 18 that pulled and hit a tree. No one thought Pang could pull off a birdie when his ball landed to the left, behind the green on 17. But Pang stunned them all and provided a birdie that eventually proved to be the difference, giving Big Canyon its third straight Jones Cup win and ninth overall.

SANTA ANA - Shady Canyon Golf Club's second act at the Jones Cup ended far worse than its debut. The five-member team had an excuse for finishing dead last, if it wanted to use one on Wednesday. The players haven't played as much because their home course has been closed the last 4 1/2 months as the Irvine club resurfaced the course's greens. Brian Gunson, the director of golf, didn't offer any excuses for Shady Canyon's fifth-place showing in the five-team tournament between local country clubs at Santa Ana Country Club.

On the surface it may appear that Santa Ana Country Club would be the underdog team in Wednesday's Jones Cup. Heading into the 14th annual event, Santa Ana has yet to win the Jones Cup. However, there can be a strong case made that Santa Ana is the favorite to win the five-person team, two-best-ball format that starts at 12:30 p.m. The 18-hole event, which also features Newport Beach, Big Canyon, Mesa Verde and Shady Canyon, is at Santa...

Kirk Manley says he hasn't seen his golf clubs as much as he would like. That might be hard to believe coming from a head professional like Manley, who works at Shady Canyon Golf Club in Irvine. Nevertheless, Manley is telling the truth. He said with Shady Canyon's closure the last 4 1/2 months, as the club resurfaced the course's greens, it has been hard to find time to play. The club, Manley said, reopens on July 3. A week before then, Manley and four members from Shady Canyon will play a round of golf on a different course.

Jake Knapp will admit he didn't make the best of decisions back in late February. The former Estancia High golf standout is not one to sit around. He played in a pick-up basketball game at UCLA, where he is on the golf team. Unfortunately he suffered an injury, a small fracture to a tiny bone in his left wrist. It was tough to sit out for two months, but he considered himself lucky the injury wasn't worse. He nearly flipped when jumping for a rebound and landed on his wrist as he was trying to break his fall, he said.
