A cyclist was taken to a local trauma center after a crash with a vehicle in Corona del Mar, police said Thursday. The crash happened about 4:50 p.m. Wednesday at Harbor View Drive and Sea Lane, said Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella. Both the Police and Fire departments responded to the scene. The cyclist complained of back pain and was taken to a local hospital then released without significant injury, according to Manzella. No arrests were made, and no citations were issued, Manzella said.

A female bicyclist was in serious condition after an accident on Newport Coast Road near the 73 Freeway Saturday morning, according to a news release from the Newport Beach Fire Department. At 8:08 a.m., fire personnel responded to the scene and found a woman unconscious on the side of the road after she apparently fell from her bicycle, fire officials said. The woman, whose name was not released, was about 40 years old and was being tended to by her husband and other bystanders when emergency personnel arrived, according to the release.

An allegedly impaired driver was arrested after a car collided with a bicycle, Newport Beach police said Friday. About 9:30 a.m., a vehicle and bicyclist crashed in the 600 block of Bayside Drive, according to Sgt. Doug Jones. NEWPORT BEACH — The trial of a man accused of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in the death of a bicyclist resulted in a hung jury, a court clerk said Friday. The Harbor Justice Center jury deadlocked in the case of Jose Luis Huerta Mundo, 38, of Anaheim. It was not immediately known how many jurors were in favor of conviction or how many were opposed. A new trial date was set for Nov. 23. Mundo pleaded guilty to driving without a license Nov. 9, but chose to take the manslaughter charge to a jury.

The Orange County district attorney's office last week filed a misdemeanor charge against the driver of a minivan involved in a Newport Beach traffic collision that killed a bicyclist this summer. Robert Anderson was driving west on East Coast Highway just east of Newport Coast Drive on the afternoon of Aug. 27 when he and the cyclist collided, Newport Beach police said at the time. Anderson, 84, lives in Irvine, according to public records. The cyclist, Debra Deem, 58, of Laguna Beach, suffered major head trauma despite wearing a helmet, police said.

Newport Beach firefighters took a bicyclist to the hospital after a crash with a white Honda, authorities said Thursday. The crash occurred about 9:05 a.m. Wednesday near West Coast Highway and Newport Boulevard, according to Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Schulz. The cyclist was taken to Santa Ana's Western Medical Center. Police and fire officials were unable to provide any information about the bicyclist's condition. Police would not release information as to the cause of the crash or how fast the Honda was traveling because the investigation was ongoing, said Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Kathy Lowe.

A female bicyclist was killed after a hit-and-run accident at about 9:45 a.m. Saturday on Newport Coast Drive between Ocean Vista and Vista Ridge drives, police said in a news release. "A preliminary investigation revealed that a female bicyclist was riding northbound on Newport Coast Drive when she was struck from behind by a black pickup truck," the release said. "The driver of the truck fled the scene without stopping to render aid and continued northbound on Newport Coast Drive.

COSTA MESA — A 16-year-old bicyclist was injured after a Jeep Wrangler hit him about 7:30 a.m. Monday at Irvine Avenue and Broadway, police said. Sgt. Phil Myers of the Costa Mesa Police Department said the boy, whose name was not released, was transported to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian with bumps and abrasions. None of his injuries were life-threatening, Myers said. The driver was cited at the scene and let go, Myers said. Residents in the Eastside neighborhood have for years been complaining about speeding cars on Broadway.

An Irvine bicyclist who died more than a week after getting hit by a car in Newport Coast, and who underwent multiple surgeries during his recovery, died of natural causes, coroner officials said Thursday. Daniel Crain, 65, died of heart disease Sunday at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. An autopsy performed Wednesday determined that his death was unrelated to the crash, authorities said. Newport Beach police said that, on Aug. 3, Crain was steering to the far right of southbound Newport Coast Drive at the Corona del Mar (73)

Prosecutors on Friday charged a Newport Coast woman with hitting and killing a bicyclist while allegedly driving drunk and texting last month. Danae Miller, 22, was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence while intoxicated for the Feb. 21 crash that killed Amine Britel, a Morocco native who owned a travel agency in Newport Beach. Police said Miller drank at her work before heading home about 6 p.m. Just a few streets away from her home, police said she hit Britel as he rode his bike eastbound on San Joaquin Hills Road.

Within hours of a break-in late Sunday, Costa Mesa police officers recovered $2,000 worth of gold jewelry from a bicyclist they later arrested as a suspect in the case. Two officers were patrolling Harbor Boulevard near Bay Street about 2 a.m. Monday when they spotted a bicyclist who seemed to be avoiding them, according to a news release from the Costa Mesa Police Department. When the officers talked to the cyclist, he told them he was on probation and admitted that he had methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia on him, according to police.

A man killed in a pedestrian-versus-bicycle accident on the Santa Ana River bike trail was a Newport Harbor High School alumnus, according to classmates. Johnathan "Johnny" Coontz, 58, died at 6:58 p.m. Friday at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana about an hour after a bicyclist hit him near where Atlanta Avenue meets the bike trail in Huntington Beach, according to the Orange County coroner's office. More recently Coontz was homeless, and court records show several convictions for drinking in public, among other offenses.

The Newport Beach Citizens Bicycle Safety Committee should include at least one member who does not ride a bicycle on the streets of Newport Beach for recreation or commuting. After all, we non-bicyclists contribute monies, through our taxes, which pay for all of those never-ending miles and miles of bicycle paths, bicycle lanes, bicycle markings and other alleged "safety measures. " Presently, bicycle riders are getting a "free ride. " Bicyclists are the only group who share the road but don't pay their fair share.

The funeral for a San Bernardino County deputy from Irvine who was killed in a traffic collision last week on Shady Canyon Drive will take place Wednesday morning in Rancho Cucamonga. On Friday, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department confirmed that one of its deputies, Det. Duane Parkison, was killed in an off-duty crash with an SUV while riding his bicycle in Irvine on the afternoon of Aug. 10. Parkison, 42, a 15-year department veteran, had been assigned to the department's Rancho Cucamonga station for five years, according to a San Bernardino sheriff's news release.
