Corona del Mar High product Jake Lemmerman went one for four to help Israel defeat Spain, 4-2, in the second round of a four-team World Baseball Classic qualifying tournament on Friday in Jupiter, Fla. Lemmerman, a Los Angeles Dodgers farmhand who started at shortstop for the second straight game, played alongside former UC Irvine star Ben Orloff, a second baseman who went hitless in three at-bats. Israel (2-0) advances to the tournament final on Sunday at 2 p.m. PT. In another World Baseball Classic qualifying tournament in Regensburg, Germany, Daniel Cooper, a pitcher at Costa Mesa High and Orange Coast College, is representing Great Britain.

UC Irvine’s Ben Orloff has been named a finalist for the 2009 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The CLASS award, an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: classroom, community, character and competition. The award program is designed exclusively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards that a senior season can bring.

SALT LAKE CITY — Junior pitcher Christian Bergman threw a complete-game four-hitter and juniors Francis Larson and Dillon Bell both homered to pace No. 1-ranked UC Irvine to a 10-1 nonconference baseball win Friday at Utah. The win, the Anteaters’ seventh straight, clinched the three-game nonconference series win for UCI (30-10). Bergman struck out a career-high nine to post his first career complete game and improve to 7-1. He did not issue a walk and faced four over the minimum.

The No. 1-ranked UC Irvine baseball team will attempt to retain its command of the Big West Conference race when it plays host to Cal State Northridge in a three-game series beginning tonight at 6 p.m. at Anteater Ballpark. UCI (31-11, 11-1 in conference) opens the weekend with a four-game lead in the loss column over second-pace Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Northridge (18-26, 4-11) represents the first of four remaining three-game conference series for the Anteaters, who have won 12 of their last 14. UCI will send junior left-hander Danny Bibona (7-1 with a 2.25 earned-run average)

IRVINE — Freshman catcher Ronnie Shaeffer went four for six with three runs batted in and a home run to lead the UC Irvine baseball team to its 14th straight Big West Conference win, a 19-6 victory over UC Davis Saturday at Anteater Ballpark. Shaeffer raised his average to .412 in 131 at-bats this season as No. 1-ranked UCI improved to 39-12, 19-1 in conference. The Anteaters, who have already clinched the program’s first outright Big West crown, have now won all seven conference series thus far this season.

STOCKTON — Eric Deraigsch belted a two out, two-run home run in the ninth inning to snap a tie and give the No. 1-ranked UC Irvine baseball team a 5-4 Big West Conference win over Pacific Saturday at Klein Family Field. The home run was Deragisch’s second of the season, but the opportunity only presented itself after shortstop Ben Orloff beat the throw on a two-out, infield single to extend the inning for Deragisch. Deragisch, facing Pacific reliever Mark McCain, jumped on an 0-1 curve ball and lifted it over the left-field fence for a 5-3 lead.

BASEBALL UC Irvine 7, UCLA 4 HOUSTON — Sophomore Ryan Fisher went four for five and drove in three runs to pace the Anteaters Sunday in the finale of the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park. Senior shortstop Ben Orloff went two for three with two runs batted in for the No. 5-ranked winners (5-2). Sophomore Crosby Slaught pitched 4 2/3 innings of shutout ball to earn the victory and junior Eric Pettis worked the final four innings to notch his third save.

The No. 10-ranked UC Irvine baseball team will open Big West Conference play tonight at 6 with the first of a three-game weekend series against No. 19-ranked Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at Anteater Ballpark. Junior left-hander Danny Bibona (3-1 with a 2.92 earned-run average) will start tonight’s opener. Junior Christian Bergman (2-1, 3.44) and sophomore Crosby Slaught (2-0, 2.92) are the scheduled UCI starters Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Both of those games begin at 1 p.m. The UCI offense is being led by sophomore left fielder Ryan Fisher, who is hitting .373 with two home runs and 17 runs batted in. Shortstop Ben Orloff has been named one of 30 candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS (Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School) Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: Classroom, Character, Community and Competition. Orloff, a four-year starter for the Anteater baseball program, is batting .302 and is tied for the team-high with 16 hits. He tops the team in doubles with four and has also recorded four runs batted in. He holds a 170 consecutive start streak and is four games shy of 200 career games played, which would make him just the fourth Anteater to reach the 200 mark.

STOCKTON — UC Irvine senior closer Blair Erickson struck out the first hitter he faced to end the eighth inning and strand two Pacific runners on base. He then fanned two in a scoreless ninth to save the Anteaters' 4-3 Big West Conference baseball win at UOP Saturday. It was the first save since April 17 for the NCAA career saves leader (52), who helped starter Wes Etheridge claim his 10th win of the campaign. The victory also gave No. 13-ranked UCI (33-14-1, 9-5 in conference)
