Tony Altobelli BELMONT SHORE - Newport Harbor High girls swim standout Carly Geehr's fingers were probably a little more wrinkly than the rest in the first hour of the CIF Southern Section Division I finals Friday night at Belmont Plaza. Geehr, a junior, had 450 yards of finals competition under her belt before some people had finished putting quarters in the parking meters. After swimming the butterfly in the Sailors' 200-yard medley relay, Geehr was back in the pool 10 minutes later for the 200 free finals, where she and Canyon High's Erin Volcan put on a memorable performance.

Tony Altobelli BELMONT SHORE - The future is looking bright for the Corona del Mar High girls swim team and a quick glance at today's CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries participant list can prove that. The Sea Kings will have two freshmen, two sophomores, a junior and a senior competing on the girls side, with four of those swimmers in two events each. "It's exciting to be so young," CdM Coach Doug Volding said. "We're going to be well represented, better than we've had in years past.

Tony Altobelli BELMONT SHORE - If only the CIF would allow Newport Harbor High junior Aaron Peirsol free reign on the pool in this year's CIF Southern Section Division I preliminaries and finals this week at Belmont Plaza. "If Aaron could swim all the events, I would have no doubt in my mind, he could win every Division I event, except maybe the breaststroke events," Newport Coach Brian Kreutzkamp said about his 2000 Olympic silver medalist. "That shows just how versitle he really is."

Barry Faulkner BELMONT SHORE - Newport Harbor High girls swimming coach Ken Lamont didn't initiate the rumor that his Sailors could capture their first CIF Southern Section team championship ever. He heard it through the grapevine. Lamont, whose Sailors did plenty to strengthen their case at Thursday's Division I preliminaries, said opposing coaches took notice of the arsenal of talent the Tars will present at tonight's 6 o'clock finals at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

Joseph Boo BELMONT SHORE - The wait is over. For the seniors on Corona del Mar High's boys water polo team, their career has been filled with so many dreams, but it took four years and a hard-fought 8-6 victory over defending champion Servite to finally achieve it with a CIF Southern Section Division II title on Wednesday. "We worked our (butts) off for four years for this," CdM senior two-meter man Garret Gentry said. "Four years of work, 17 years of training, this is it right here," senior Alex Niehenke said.
