The blood that remained cool amid the cold now flows through Bob Ctvrtlik. It’s in his veins, the lines run, too, through his three sons. That blood that kept Josef Ctvrtlik alive while steps away from a torturous death, resides somewhere deep in his youngest son. How does Bob Ctvrtlik block out the periphery and finish the task at hand? How is he able to ignore turbulence for the sake of reaching a destination? Why does his life seem so picture perfect, though there is reason to feel gloom?

Three people were arrested in Long Beach Tuesday after police said they were involved in a dramatic armed bank robbery in Newport Beach less than an hour earlier. About 11 a.m., two men walked into the Bank of America, 3300 E. Coast Hwy., in Corona del Mar, wearing dark clothes, dark sunglasses, fake beards and brandishing handguns. The men ordered employees and bank customers to lie on the ground while they hopped the teller counter and took cash before fleeing, police said.

BELMONT SHORE - Corona del Mar High girls swim coach Doug Volding was all smiles Thursday following his team's standout showing at the CIF Relays Preliminaries at Belmont Plaza. All seven of his teams qualified for Saturday's finals, with three teams earning berths in the championship bracket. Brittney Bowlus led off the 6 x 50 free with a CIF-qualifying time of 25.72 as CdM logged a fourth-place effort of 2:34.98. With Bowlus were Kim McKay, Christina Hewko, Jackie McCoy, Vivian Liao and Lauren Powers.

BELMONT SHORE - Newport-Mesa District boys and girls swimmers will be among those competing for berths in the CIF Southern Section Division Finals, when preliminaries begin today at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Division I hopefuls, including Newport Harbor High boys standout Aaron Peirsol and top Sailor girls, Nicole Mackey and Carly Geehr, will begin pursuit of one of eight berths in the championship finals, when prelims begin at 10 a.m. The Division II prelims, including swimmers from Corona del Mar and Costa Mesa, start at 4:30 p.m. In addition to eight spots in the championship finals, eight swimmers, and/or relay teams, will qualify for a consolation final in each division.

Tony Altobelli BELMONT SHORE - Corona del Mar High boys swimming standout Sherwin Kim went up against the best of the best at Saturday's CIF Southern Section Division II finals. The junior, who was the Sea Kings' only individual finalist on the boys side, posted a personal-best time in the 100-yard freestyle finals and placed eighth with a 48.59. Kim posted a 2:00.64 in the 200 individual medley finals, but was disqualified during the butterfly portion for separating his feet, according to CdM Coach Tim Chaix.

Barry Faulkner BELMONT SHORE - Newport Harbor High girls swimming coach Ken Lamont didn't initiate the rumor that his Sailors could capture their first CIF Southern Section team championship ever. He heard it through the grapevine. Lamont, whose Sailors did plenty to strengthen their case at Thursday's Division I preliminaries, said opposing coaches took notice of the arsenal of talent the Tars will present at tonight's 6 o'clock finals at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

Steve Virgen BELMONT SHORE - With Irvine High running away with the CIF Southern Section Division I title, there were other goals to reach for the Newport Harbor girls swim team Friday at Belmont Plaza. Newport juniors Nicole Mackey and Hayley Peirsol made sure their names would be in the school record book with their swims in the CIF meet. Mackey, who owns or is affiliated with seven out of 11 Newport Harbor swimming records, grabbed two runner-up finishes in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.

BELMONT SHORE - Corona del Mar High freshman Jordan Anae broke her own school record in the 100-yard backstroke, not once, but twice at the CIF Southern Section Division II Swim Preliminaries at Belmont Plaza Thursday. Anae (100 freestyle and 100 back), sophomore Kim McKay (200 and 500 free) and junior Brittany Bowlus (50 free) qualified for Saturday's championship finals. McKay, Bowlus and Anae, along with sophomore Vivian Liao also qualified in the 200 and 400 free relays.
