A 22-year-old man was in critical condition Monday after his roommate reportedly hit him on the head several times with a beer bottle in Costa Mesa, police said. Costa Mesa police are still looking for Jose Ramirez, 35, who allegedly fought with roommate Renalto Flores about 12:15 a.m. Monday at their home in the 1900 block of Anaheim Avenue, said Lt. Dale Birney. He said witnesses told police that the two men got into a verbal argument and then a physical fight that ended with Flores being hit on the head.

Police are looking for four people who attacked two men and smashed a beer bottle over one of their heads during a confrontation at Lions Park on Sunday afternoon, authorities said. About 5 p.m. Sunday, two groups of men were at Lions Park when members from each group got into a verbal altercation, police Sgt. Bryan Glass said. One group teased the other about where “they were from” until the groups faced off, four men versus two men. The larger group easily won the fight and one person smashed a beer bottle over one of the two men’s head, officials said.

Two Costa Mesa boys were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and being drunk in public after they reportedly assaulted a 12-year-old boy in Eastside Costa Mesa, police said Thursday. The 12-year-old Costa Mesa boy was walking with a group of friends near Santa Ana Avenue and Ogle Street just before 3 p.m. Wednesday when two 17-year-olds walked by, reportedly making foul-mouthed comments about a girl walking with the 12-year-old, Sgt. A Memorial Day barbecue in Costa Mesa turned bloody Monday as a man was taken to the hospital after allegedly being stabbed with a broken beer bottle, police said. Police responded to a disturbance call about 6:15 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Placentia Avenue. A man, whom police had not identified by press time, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Western Medical Center. An officer went to the hospital to question the victim, police said.

A Garden Grove man accused of stabbing someone in Costa Mesa this week was expected to appear in court today to face allegations of first-degree attempted murder. Police arrested Dolores Jesus Ortega, 18, at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a call about a fight near Harbor Boulevard and Victoria Street the day before, police said. Ortega, a suspected gang member, got into a confrontation with a man he knew Monday and threw a beer bottle at him before stabbing him twice in the abdomen and running away, Sgt. Bryan Glass said.

Deepa Bharath Newport Beach police arrested a 20-year-old Riverside man on suspicion of assaulting another man with a beer bottle at a party early Sunday morning, officials said. Marcos Pena Osorio was at a party in the 800 block of West Oceanfront when he became involved in an argument with 31-year-old Noel Roberts of Newport Beach, Lt. Doug Fletcher said. Osorio reportedly hit Roberts on the head with the bottle and ran out of the house, Fletcher said.

BALBOA INN EXPANSION Commissioners are scheduled to approve plans to expand the Balboa Inn on Main Street and Ocean Front. The project will include the construction of a building with up to three stories and 11 new guest suites, a guest spa area, about 2,000 square feet of retail space, and a partially covered, 20-space, tandem parking area. The project also includes the demolition of an existing single-story retail building and pool area. What to expect: While the project has been favored by city officials, staff members said residents have complained about view restrictions.

When commissioners approved the permit in May 1998, it included a waiver for 41 parking spaces on the basis that most of the restaurant's second floor would be used for interactive video and sports games. Parking requirements for game arcades are lower than those for restaurants.

One Newport Beach resident said they were some of the worst screams for help he’d ever heard. Another said at first he thought the yelling was coming from the TV. Police continued to search Wednesday for two men armed with a handgun and a knife who invaded a Newport Beach apartment Tuesday night, officials said. The men, described as in their 20s, broke into the Coronado at Newport South complex at 1800 E. 16th St. shortly before midnight, neighbors said. There were no signs of forced entry.

A Riverside man was convicted Friday of four felonies stemming from a 2008 bar fight that involved a bartender being attacked with brass knuckles at Mutt Lynch's in Newport Beach. Bobby Angel Alvarez, 27, was found guilty of two felonies of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, felony battery with serious bodily injury and possession of a deadly weapon, according to a court clerk. Connected to the case was Richard Anthony Fuentes, 28, who was found not guilty on three similar felony counts.

Two Costa Mesa men were arrested New Year’s Day on suspicion of fighting with beer bottles, according to Costa Mesa police. Robert Lopez and Saul Ivan Padilla, both 18, were taken into custody near Knowell Place and Maple Avenue after police received a call reporting a fight in the 2100 block of Pomona Avenue, according to Sgt. Bryan Glass. Witnesses were able to describe the vehicle the men left in and police later found them driving with two other men, but only Lopez and Padilla were arrested.
