UC Irvine freshman closer Blair Erickson, who leads the nation with 11 saves, has been named to Baseball America's 2004 midseason All-American freshman team. Erickson entered Friday's game against UC Santa Barbara with an 0-1 record, a 2.91 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings pitched. His 11 saves, six of which have come against top-25 teams, are a school single-season record. He is three shy of the Big West Conference freshman save record set by Chad Cordero of Cal State Fullerton in 2001.

UC IRVINE - The UC Irvine baseball team, in its first season since 1992, ranks No. 8 among the nation's best recruiting classes, according to Baseball America. The Anteaters, who open their season at home, Jan. 25, against the University of San Diego, feature pitcher/first baseman Brett Smith of Sonora High and Chatsworth High's second baseman Gregg Wallis, UCI's first player to commit, as well as a load of junior college stars. Coach Dave Serrano's UC Irvine baseball squad is ranked No. 4 nationally this week by Baseball America after the Anteaters went 3-0 in winning the Round Rock Regional. UCI, 43-15-1 overall, moved up five spots from last week's poll as the program has achieved its highest Division I ranking. The Anteaters climbed nine spots to No. 6 in the Collegiate Baseball poll this week. UCI travels to Wichita State (53-20) for a Super Regional match-up beginning Saturday at 9 a.m., which will be televised by ESPN2.

UC Irvine junior Matt Whitehouse has been named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week in baseball. Whitehouse, a left-hander who missed last season with injuries, struck out six and allowed two hits in 6 1/3 shutout innings as the Anteaters topped Baylor, 5-0, on Saturday at Anteater Ballpark. With his first win in nearly two years, Whitehouse improved to 5-0 in his UCI career and helped the 'Eaters sweep Baylor and is ranked No. 25 by Baseball America this week. JORTH, U.S. TO COMPETE Newport Harbor junior Clinton Jorth will play for the U.S. youth water polo team, ages 16 to 18, against the New Zealand youth team today and Sunday at Newport Harbor High. The New Zealand team is making a stop on its way home from the Pan-Pacific tournament in Calgary, where Jorth's team also played. Admission is free for Saturday's game at 6 p.m. and Sunday's at 3 p.m. Marina Coach Robert Lynn coaches the U.S. team. UCI BASEBALL RANKED The UC Irvine baseball team has been ranked No. 38 in the Baseball America preseason top 50. The Anteaters were 36-24 last season, when they advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the second time as a Division I program.

Blair Erickson, who amassed 17 saves to rank among the national leaders as the freshman closer of the UC Irvine baseball team, has made his seventh All-American team. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound right-hander has been named second-team freshman All-American by Baseball America. Erickson, competing at the USA Baseball national team trials, pitched a perfect ninth inning Thursday, recording two strikeouts, to complete a five-pitcher no-hitter in a 9-0 exhibition victory over Canada at Durham, N.C. Erickson, who fanned 51 in 37 1/3 innings to help lead the Anteaters to the program's first NCAA Division I regional, set a Big West Conference freshman and UCI single-season record with his 17 saves.

The 20-player UC Irvine baseball recruiting class has been ranked No. 14 in the nation by Baseball America. The recruiting effort, spearheaded by recruiting coordinator and assistant coach Sergio Brown, consists of 14 freshmen, four junior college transfers and a pair of four-year transfers. Baseball America also tabbed shortstop Luis Tovar, as well as pitchers Christian Bergman, Reid Suitor, Daniel Bibona, Cory Hamilton and Wes Etheridge as key recruits to watch. Tovar, out of Kofa High in Yuma, Ariz.

The UC Irvine baseball program's recruiting efforts have been recognized for the third consecutive year as the 2003-04 class has been rated No. 22 by Collegiate Baseball. UCI is among three Big West Conference teams to be featured in the Top 30. Cal State Fullerton (18th) and Long Beach State (30th) are also recognized by the periodical. The Anteaters welcome a class of 13 newcomers -- 11 freshmen and two community college transfers. Heading the group are freshmen Justin Cassel, David Huff, Blair Erickson and Chad Lundahl.

The Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year, who earned first-team All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball and was named second-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn., was drafted in the 16th round by the St. Louis Cardinals last week. The left-hander was 12-1 with a 2.63 earned-run average to help the Anteaters claim the program’s first Big West title.

UC Irvine sophomore Chris Nicoll pitched 7 2/3 strong innings and freshman closer Blair Erickson earned his third save of the series (and eighth of the season) to help the visiting Anteaters earn a 1-0 nonconference baseball win Sunday in Waco, Texas. It was the third straight one-run victory over the Bears for the Anteaters, who swept the series to improve to 12-3-1. UCI, ranked No. 25 by Collegiate Baseball, scored in the first inning, when Matt Fisher doubled and scored on Mark Wagner's RBI double for all the 'Eaters would need.

UC Irvine ace Matt Summers, the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year, added another honor to his impressive season as he was was named a Baseball America third-team All-American. Summers went undefeated in the Big West, compiling an 8-0 record and finished his year with an 11-4 mark. The right-handed pitcher helped UCI reach a NCAA Super Regional at the University of Virgina. It was UCI's second super regional appearance. The Anteaters also have seven NCAA Tournament appearances.

UC Irvine junior pitcher Scott Gorgen, a third-team All-American last season, is among 75 of the nation’s top collegiate players named to the preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List. Gorgen is the only player from the Big West Conference to appear on the initial list. The right-hander was 13-3 with a 2.83 earned-run average last season, when he had 117 strikeouts in 132 2/3 innings and limited opponents to a .235 batting average. Gorgen also pitched six complete games including postseason wins over Texas and Wichita State.

DIGIULIO RANKED NO. 2 Joseph DiGiulio of Newport Beach made it to the final of the Winter Super National tennis tournament in Arizona on Jan. 1, propelling the 11-year-old to No. 2 in the country in the United States Tennis Assn. boys' 12 singles rankings. DiGiulio, who has also held the No. 1 ranking in boys' 12 doubles for several months, topped No. 1 seed Jonathan Huang of Santa Ana in the Super National semifinals at Randolph Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz. He then fell to Reo Asami of Irvine in the final, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
