More than 400 people helped raise $60,000 at a boat auction and marine gear sale for the benefit of Orange Coast College's School of Sailing and Seamanship on June 1. The annual event was held at the school's Newport Beach facility and featured an assortment of such maritime items as boats, kayaks, rowing sculls, sails, rigging, life rafts, dinghies, outboards and electronic equipment. The school is at 1801 W. Coast Highway, between the Balboa Bay Club and the Orange County Sea Scout Base.

June Casagrande NEWPORT BEACH -- As the nation mourns the loss of twoheartwarming entertainers, the city mourns the loss of friends. Milton Berle, the comedian so legendary he was dubbed "Mr. Television," died Wednesday in Los Angeles at the age of 93 after a battle with colon cancer. Dudley Moore, the beloved 66-year-old actor and musician, died Tuesday of pneumonia as a complication of progressive supranuclear palsy, at his home in New Jersey.

A sewage spill has led Orange County health officials to close a part of the ocean in Newport Beach. The area affected by the 250-gallon spill includes from ?B? dock at Balboa Bay Club down bay to Arbor Drive in Newport Bay. A sewage lift pump failure in a private property owner?s sewer lateral ? a pipe that carries waste from a residence to the sanitary sewer main running in the street ? caused the contamination. Officials will keep the area closed to water activity until they determine it?

The 20th anniversary of the Orange County Ronald McDonald House will be celebrated at a tea and fashion show from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort, 1221 W. Coast Hwy., Newport Beach. Speakers will share about the 20-year history of the house, and there will be a silent auction and opportunity drawing. Toni C. Klein passed away on March 9th, 2010. Toni was the beloved wife of David A. Klein, mother of Henry Hewitt (Suzanne), Rodger Klein, Thomas Klein (Kathy). Loving nana to Marlon Hewitt and Kyle Klein. Dearest friend to Alice Rogers, Jo Jo Ament, Nancy Wright and Dr. Shelly Reiss. Funeral Services will be conducted at 10 AM on March 12, 2010 at the Hillside Mortuary with a celebration of life to follow at the Balboa Bay Club, Newport Beach, CA from 1 PM to 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, the Klein family request that donations be made to Hoag Hospital in Toni’s name.

It was a grand opening of the summer season at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort as Newport Beach Mayor Don Webb and his wife, Jan, officially proclaimed the start of the summer social season on the bay. More important, the recent Sunday afternoon ceremony marked the 14th year that the Balboa Bay Club has honored the achievements of local graduating high school seniors by offering the 1221 Club's scholarship awards. Beverly Ray Parkhurst, chairwoman of the Balboa Bay Club's board, proudly addressed the crowd of nautically attired guests and noted that the club had donated more than $400,000 in grants to date.

Newport Beach traffic may be impacted while the Orange County Sanitation District performs construction on West Coast Highway. A contractor will trench across the highway starting Monday, and construction will stretch between Tustin Avenue and the Balboa Bay Club entrance, according to the district's website . The construction may take three weeks. Traffic in the area will be reduced to one lane in each direction, and noisier activities are scheduled between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to reduce impact on the community, the district said.

The future of America was celebrated at a recent reception honoring outstanding high school seniors from the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. The 2012 Balboa Bay Club & Resort's "1221" College Scholarships were awarded to an exceptional group of young people with big dreams and even bigger potential to succeed and make an enormous difference in people's lives. For the past two decades, the Balboa Bay Club has awarded college grants to students recommended by their high school teachers, counselors and principals.

OCC anniversary exhibit opens Feb. 2 Orange Coast College's 60th anniversary art exhibit will open Friday, Feb. 2. The exhibit, in the new Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion, features a number of artifacts from OCC's history, including posters, photographs, books and more. The centerpiece of the show is "Activities of the Gremlins," murals painted on the school grounds during World War II. From 5 to 9 p.m., the gallery will hold an opening reception for the show, which runs through April 19. The reception will also serve as a dedication for the gallery, which finished construction at the end of last year.
