Balboa Bay Club

NEWS

However famous the Balboa Bay Club may be, visitors are apparently having trouble finding it. No matter that the club has been operating in its same location since 1948, or that a guard shack thought to be intimidating was recently removed to make the entry feel more inviting. The Balboa Bay Resort - the public side of the club - continually gets calls from people who can't figure out where to turn, concierge Patrick Hynes told City Council members during their meeting Tuesday.

I am a member of the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club, and I cannot understand why the City Council has not considered the two buildings in front of the racquet club. They're vacant, they're owned by the Irvine Co. — why couldn't they claim eminent domain for those? It's got perfect parking, they're not that old, they could be reconfigured, it would cost a lot less money, and they're centrally located. I do not understand why they don't pursue that. JOAN SAMMIS Newport Beach We vehemently oppose any thought of placing a new city hall at the tennis club.

Presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney stopped in Newport Beach on Friday as part of a fundraising tour throughout California. The private event at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort, with an entrance fee starting at $1,000, was met outside the club's West Coast Highway confines by both supporters and dissenters of the former Massachusetts governor's candidacy. In spite of Newport's status as a conservative stronghold in the county, the five or so Romney supporters were the minority of the demonstrators present Friday.

Beverly Ray Having read yet another misleading letter to the editor, irresponsibly printed, despite the editor's knowledge of the true facts of the matter, I find it impossible to hold my silence any longer. The Balboa Bay Club has never played any role in water pollution, and it is most unfair for the Daily Pilot to continue spreading misinformation that the Balboa Bay Club has done so. Any right-thinking person realizes that it would be completely ridiculous for a company operating on the bay to do anything to spoil the water there.

Part of Newport Harbor between the Balboa Bay Club and Arbor Drive will remain closed until at least this afternoon, after county health officials said bacteria samples taken over the weekend showed that the water was unsafe. The Orange County Health Care Agency shut down a part of the Lido Channel between the Balboa Bay Club’s “B” dock and Arbor Drive in Newport Bay after reporting Friday that a 250-gallon sewage spill had contaminated the water. The sewage was going through pipes from a home to the pipes under Pacific Coast Highway when a pump failed and caused the sewage to gush out of a manhole near the Balboa Bay Club and into the water, officials said.

June Casagrande NEWPORT BEACH -- The last of four lawsuits over a botched deal to purchase the Balboa Bay Club has been settled, ending a pitched battle between a longtime member of the exclusive club and its owner. After two days in the courtroom trial over the aborted $73.5-million transaction, former Orange County Chief Executive William Popejoy and Bay Club owner Beverly Ray reached a settlement that brought the trial to an early close. "All matters in the dispute have been settled," Ron Rus, attorney for Popejoy, said in a prepared statement.

How can the Santa Ana Regional Water Control Board sleep at night if they are content to fine a prosperous organization such as the Balboa Bay Club because of serious and repetitive violations, without issuing a cease-and-desist order ("Water quality board fines Balboa Bay Club," April 30). These fines seem to be but a slap on the wrist to the Balboa Bay Club, which has graciously accepted the fine with a thank you, and continued its obnoxious violations for over a 12-month span.
