NEWPORT COAST — At 5-8, their records aren’t the only thing the Costa Mesa High and Sage Hill School boys’ volleyball teams have in common. After the Lightning defeated the Mustangs, 25-18, 25-13, 25-2, both Sage Hill Coach Dan Thomassen and Costa Mesa Coach Ryan Bagwell wanted to see more toughness. For the Lightning, the toughness has become more of a factor in close games which they’ve hard difficulty winning. In the Mustangs’ case, it’s lacking in their serving and sometimes in their hitting.

Ryan Bagwell always thought he would like to coach volleyball. He just had no idea it would be this soon. Bagwell, 20, was a senior on the 2006 Costa Mesa High volleyball team that went to the CIF Southern Section Division III championship match, under Chris Komer. It was the farthest a Costa Mesa boys’ team had ever gone in the volleyball postseason. The Mustangs lost to Santa Monica in four games after winning their first league title. Now in his second year at Orange Coast College, Bagwell elected to forgo playing volleyball for the Pirates to coach the Mustangs boys’ team this year.

Recent Costa Mesa High graduate Ryan Bagwell was named Most Valuable Player of the Golden West League by the circuit's boys' volleyball coaches. Bagwell heads a list of six Mustangs and five Estancia players recognized for their outstanding play. Trevor Smith, Tony Krikorian and Mitch Caldwell of Costa Mesa, along with Scott Markley, Shaun Markley, Dallas Kopp and Ian Lamb of Estancia were first-team all-league selections. Costa Mesa's Andrew Melcer and Will Lefebvre, along with Estancia's Jacoby Lawrence, were second-team honorees.

Although senior Ryan Bagwell is probably the Costa Mesa High boys' volleyball team's most powerful outside hitter, it may not even be the thing he's best at on the volleyball court. Bagwell has a tricky jump serve that he delivers with all kinds of motion and velocity. At one point during the second game of Costa Mesa's match against Ocean View last Wednesday, Bagwell tallied seven consecutive service aces. In the process, he turned a close game into a lopsided victory by finding the corners with his low, whispering serves.

COSTA MESA ? The Costa Mesa High boys' volleyball team has high expectations this season, and as Wednesday's match against Ocean View showed, the team isn't going to let a few obstacles slow it down. Before the match, the Mustangs, already playing without senior outside hitter Will Lefebvre (broken foot), found out that starting setter Andrew Melcer was out with mononucleosis. But with Tony Krikorian doing a stellar job filling in at setter and senior Ryan Bagwell putting on a serving display seldom seen in the Golden West League, the Mustangs rambled to a 25-17, 25-11, 25-16 victory over the Seahawks.

Rick Devereux The progression the Costa Mesa High boys volleyball team has made is in direct correlation to the progress outside hitter Ryan Bagwell has made. When Bagwell was a freshman, the Mustangs were 1-11 in the Golden West League. As sophomore, Costa Mesa finished 5-7 in league. Thanks in large part to the junior, Mesa started the season 3-0 in league. Bagwell had 10, 13 and 15 kills in the three league matches, all team highs, to earn Daily Pilot Athlete of the Week honors.
