A passenger hit a bus driver on the head after being asked to get off the bus, authorities said Monday morning. Adam J. Stone, 27, boarded the Orange County Transportation Authority bus near West Coast Highway and Superior Avenue in Newport Beach at 6:14 p.m. Sunday, but his pass was expired, said Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Gary Strachan. When the driver asked him to step off the bus, Stone hit the driver with the blunt end of a knife and fled, Strachan said. He added that sheriff's deputies arrested Stone with the help of a Huntington Beach police helicopter and Newport Beach police officers.

Two brothers accused of assaulting an elderly woman while she waited at a Costa Mesa bus stop pleaded not guilty Friday, court records show. Paul Grigore Patrulescu, 30, and Ciprian Patrulescu, 31, both of Costa Mesa, each face one felony charge of inflicting injury on an elderly adult. They are suspected of punching an 83-year-old Irvine woman twice in the head, according to the Orange County district attorney's office. About 4 a.m. Aug. 18 near Harbor Boulevard and Baker Street, the Patrulescus reportedly first asked the woman if she wanted to eat dinner with them, but when she refused and then screamed, they struck her twice in the face before fleeing on foot, prosecutors said.

COSTA MESA - Police are searching for additional victims of a dance instructor accused of sexually assaulting an underage student, police said Tuesday. Brandon Christopher Marriott, 21, of Westminster, is charged with two felony counts of sexual penetration of a minor and one felony count of oral copulation of a minor. He allegedly assaulted a female dance student he at the Focus Dance Center in Irvine. Marriott is accused of assaulting a 15-year-old student on two occasions between July and August, according to a joint news release from the Costa Mesa Police Department and the Orange County district attorney's office.

Deepa Bharath NEWPORT BEACH -- Police on Friday morning arrested a 44-year-old man accused of assaulting a Long Beach woman who was visiting him at his Superior Avenue home. Officers arrested Walter Cordell in front of the Costa Mesa Motor Inn on Harbor Boulevard at about 10:30 a.m., said Sgt. Steve Shulman, spokesman for the Newport Beach Police Department. Deirdre Newman and Steve Virgen Police are investigating a report that a parent assaulted the head coach of the Estancia High School girls' basketball team. The report filed Tuesday documents an alleged assault by the mother of a player against coach Tami Rappa after a home basketball game Tuesday night. Linn Brady reportedly shoved her shoulder into Rappa's chest because she was upset that her daughter did not play in the game. On Wednesday, Principal Tom Antal and Athletic Director Nancy Ferda removed Brady's daughter from the team because she violated the team's code of conduct by missing more than three practices without a justifiable excuse, Rappa said.

A Corona del Mar man accused of barricading himself inside his home Monday morning for several hours after meeting a woman the night before faces a slew of felony charges and could face decades behind bars. David Charles Wilson, 48, was charged with three counts of rape and sexual penetration with a foreign object, felony aggravated assault, criminal threats, forced oral copulation, false imprisonment by violence, and one misdemeanor count of resisting or obstructing police, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Police arrested an Anaheim gang member on suspicion of intimidating a Costa Mesa witness to dissuade her from testifying in an assault case, authorities said Thursday. Obed Moyses "Danger" Navarrete-Salgado, 19, was arrested June 26, according to Costa Mesa police. Police said he threatened to harm a co-defendant in the assault case and the co-defendant's family. Police did not release information about the assault case. Navarrete-Salgado remains in Orange County Men's Central Jail in Santa Ana. Police said they are looking for additional victims or suspects.

A Santa Ana man faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon after a fight in the Mesa Del Mar neighborhood Sunday, Costa Mesa police said. Police arrested Edgar Lopez-Varela, 19, shortly before 6 a.m. after he allegedly fought with another man in the 900 block of Mission Drive and smashed a beer bottle on the his face, said Sgt. Bryan Glass. “The two men got into an argument outside, and the argument turned into a fight,” Glass said. Police arrested Lopez-Varela on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon that wasn’t a firearm.

Man arrested for attempted assault Costa Mesa Police Friday morning arrested a Long Beach man on suspicion of attempted rape outside a bar. Sedric Degram, 23, was arrested just after midnight after he allegedly tried to sexually assault a woman he met in Pierce Street Annex on 17th Street, Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Marty Carver said. The two had met inside the bar, then went outside by the Ralphs supermarket and started kissing, Carver said. Degram allegedly became aggressive and tried to assault her, but she got away after a struggle, he said.

Costa Mesa police arrested a homeless man Tuesday for allegedly throwing an object at a 3-year-old in Lion's Park. David Banks, 42, of Costa Mesa, who police identified as homeless, was arrested in connection with the incident. He was charged with felony child cruelty, assault and battery, assault of an officer, felony vandalism to a police unit and obstruction of justice. Police received a call about 2:10 p.m. of a man hitting a young child and making the child cry in Lions Park, said Costa Mesa Police Lt. Bryan Glass.

Newport Beach police Friday arrested a Colton resident who they say tried to attack another man with a bottle during a bar fight. The fight started when Yanotan Casas, 22, was arguing with the man inside Baja Sharkeez on the Balboa Peninsula about 1:30 a.m., according police The altercation spilled out into a parking lot, where Casas ended up on the ground, Lt. Evan Sailor said. "While he's on the ground, he sees a bottle, grabs the bottle and tries to hit the victim," Sailor said.

Police are looking for two men who started a fight outside Goat Hill Tavern that required four people to seek medical treatment, two of them for stab wounds, authorities said Monday. Costa Mesa police responded to reports of gunshots fired in the Costa Mesa bar's parking lot at 1830 Newport Blvd. about 1:45 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release. Witnesses confirmed that no firearm was used but said one of the suspects broke a bottle to use in the scuffle, police said. A group of family and friends were celebrating in the bar Saturday night and into Sunday morning.

Prosecutors this week changed the charges against a Newport Beach woman who had been accused of ramming an Orange County sheriff's deputy with her car at John Wayne Airport in July. Rebecca Lee McLaughlin, 49, now faces an attempted murder charge instead of attempted murder on a peace officer. She's also charged with assault with a deadly weapon. She pleaded not guilty in Orange County Superior Court on Friday. In July, prosecutors said McLaughlin was driving her SUV and broke a parking barricade in an airport parking structure before trying to exit the lot. A sheriff's deputy heard the commotion and tried to stop McLaughlin, who then turned her wheels toward the deputy and tried to run him down, prosecutors said.

Following the same trend as the last two years, crime in Newport Beach declined in 2013, according to preliminary numbers from police. Combined, violent crimes and property crimes dropped exactly 1% — although property crimes increased very slightly, the department's brass announced at a monthly statistics meeting that reporters were invited to attend Thursday. "We're safer today in Newport Beach than we've ever been in the history of the city," Newport Beach Police Department Chief Jay Johnson said.

Police have arrested a Costa Mesa woman who allegedly drove through her neighbors' lawns and recklessly down the street, disregarding the safety of pedestrians including children headed to school. Tuesday was the second time in a week that she had been arrested for using her car as a weapon, police said. About 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sandra Montag, 48, drove her silver Toyota Camry in circles near her home in the 1600 block of Labrador Drive in Costa Mesa, almost hitting a man walking his dog, according to a news release from the Costa Mesa Police Department.

An Orange County swim instructor has been sentenced to 16 months in state prison for sexually assaulting two teenage females he met through coaching, authorities said Tuesday. Todd Robert Sousa, 39, co-owned and taught classes for a swim school that offered lessons for children and adults, according to the Orange County district attorney's office. He was accused of assaulting two 15-year-olds at an Orange County hotel in September 2009, prosecutors said. He had sex with one of the victims after she turned 16. He pleaded guilty in June to six felony counts of lewd acts upon a child and one felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse.

Costa Mesa police have arrested a man accused of kidnapping and assaulting his estranged wife, whom he suspected was in a relationship with another man. Martin Neas, 36, allegedly stalked his wife - who had a restraining order against him - and followed her to a drug store in Santa Ana just before midnight Thursday. As the woman tried to leave in her Mini Cooper, Neas pushed her into the car's passenger seat and assaulted her, leaving her with bruises and swelling on her face and leg, police said.

A Laguna Hills man pleaded not guilty Monday to allegations that he plotted to have an underage teenage relative - who he allegedly raped - kidnapped and taken to Mexico, according to the Orange County Superior Court website. Jesus Acosta, 58, is charged with 11 felonies, including soliciting to commit kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, rape, incest, dissuading a witness by force or threat and making criminal threats. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of violating a protective order.

Costa Mesa police Thursday said they have identified a suspect in a sexual assault and an attempted sexual assault in two home invasions earlier this year. They say they believe Thomas Walker, a 46-year-old transient, sexually assaulted a woman at knifepoint and attempted to sexually assault another in two incidents less than a month apart in Costa Mesa. Walker has a long criminal background, police said, but had been out of jail on Post-Release Community Supervision (PCS) at the time of the alleged crimes in January and February.
