Deepa Bharath COSTA MESA -- Continuing the nationwide trend of declining crime statistics, overall crime in the city was down by about 7% during the first half of this year, compared with the same period in 1999, according to numbers released this week by the FBI. There were fewer violent crimes this year, except for cases of forcible rape. That number went up from eight last year to 13 this year. There were four murders during the first six months of last year compared with none from January to June this year.

Man pleads guilty to bilking investors A Newport Beach stockbroker pleaded guilty Friday to charges that he bilked investors out of about $3 million. Richard O'Leary, 56, entered his plea in federal court in Santa Ana and is scheduled for sentencing July 25, according to a U.S. Department of Justice spokesman. Operating at several different brokerages since 1993, O'Leary promised clients he would double their money but used it for himself and his family, giving forged financial statements to investors, according to a press release.

NEWPORT BEACH East Coast Highway: Vandals reportedly smashed a display window at The Flowerman in the 3100 block at 11:49 a.m. Sunday.

Arson investigators are looking into the suspicious circumstances surrounding a fire that destroyed a Corona del Mar park playground Monday night, Newport Beach fire officials said Tuesday. Shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, Newport Beach firefighters were called to Begonia Park’s playground off Bayside Drive and Carnation Avenue, where 20-foot high flames quickly engulfed the 2-year-old playground equipment. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, but the equipment and surrounding area was burnt, melted and disfigured by the heat.

Arson investigators are working to determine what sparked a blaze that engulfed a garage and spread to other parts of a home, fire officials said Friday. Twenty-five firefighters responded to a call about 8 p.m. Thursday in the 3000 block of Hayes Avenue in Costa Mesa and found the garage flooded in flames and smoke. As firefighters battled the fire, it spread to the main part of the home before it was extinguished. One resident was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, and no firefighters were injured.

Corsica Drive: Arson was reported in the 100 block at 8:31 a.m. Monday. 15th Street: A physical fight was reported in the 800 block at 2:05 a.m. Monday. Emerald Avenue: A suspect was arrested after making prowler noises in the 100 block at 8:02 a.m. Monday. It took Costa Mesa firefighters about 10 minutes to extinguish a small blaze that they say an "apparently disgruntled" 90-year-old man started in the middle of his hotel room Sunday afternoon. Costa Mesa Battalion Chief Chris Riley said the 1:20 p.m. fire at the Holiday Inn was ignited by the man, who then fled the scene and was arrested on suspicion of arson at a nearby hotel. Riley said officials suspect the man ignited papers to start the fire, though the investigation is continuing.

Closet fire breaks out in bookstore Barnes and Noble Booksellers in South Coast Metro suffered $20,000 worth of damage after a fire broke out in one of its closets Sunday morning, Costa Mesa Fire officials said. The fire was "small" and was put out by the sprinklers even before firefighters arrived at about 10:55 a.m., officials said. No one was injured. There was minor fire damage in the closet. Officials said water was also found on the floor and outside the closet with water leaking down into Mikasa, which is directly below.
