IRVINE - It was '80s night at Anteater Ballpark on Tuesday. Very few dressed the part for UC Irvine's baseball game. But in the bottom of the third inning, Cal State Bakersfield starter Taylor Aikenhead showed up throwing in the low 80s. The Anteaters finally undressed him. They collected four hits, half of them for extra bases, and four runs, two on a home run by junior Dominique Taylor. That was all the No. 21-ranked Anteaters needed. They took the lead and never looked back, winning the nonconference game, 6-1. It took the Anteaters (11-2)

RIVERSIDE — UC Irvine's bid to host one of 16 NCAA baseball regionals was denied Sunday by an NCAA committee that announced the 16 bids. Long Beach State, which finished tied for second place in the Big West Conference, claimed what many speculated would be the third of three bids to host regionals in the West. The University of San Diego, which will host a regional at San Diego State, and Arizona State were the other West regional sites. UCI Coach Dave Serrano, who had spoken confidently about his school's chances to host what would have been the program's first regional at Anteater Ballpark, learned moments before Sunday's regular-season-ending win at UC Riverside, that the Anteaters had played their final home game this season.

Andrew Thurman said he wanted to watch the first day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in an open setting, with family and friends. He also wanted to watch it at a place that has been very close to his heart. He said it was only fitting to watch the draft at UC Irvine, at Newkirk Pavilion, next to Anteater Ballpark. It also ended up being fitting that he was selected on the first day, No. 40 overall, when the Houston Astros picked the right-handed pitcher. Thurman is UC Irvine's highest draft pick in the program's new era, edging Anteater alumnus, Brett Smith, who was chosen 42nd overall by the New York Yankees in 2004.

IRVINE - It was a loss about which UC Irvine baseball coach Mike Gillespie wanted to be anything but trivial. But nothing less than a bit of baseball lore that unfolded at Anteater Ballpark on Wednesday may have upstaged the consequences of the Anteaters' 7-3 nonconference loss to visiting San Diego. San Diego junior third baseman Kris Bryant launched his NCAA-leading 30th home run of the season in the second inning to conclude his regular-season with seven homers in his last six games.

IRVINE - Taylor Sparks has been more explosion than ignition lately for the UC Irvine baseball team's offense. But it was perhaps his least impressive hit of late that proved to be the difference in the Anteaters' 4-3 triumph in 11 innings over visiting Cal State Northridge in the opener of a three-game Big West Conference series at Anteater Ballpark. Sparks, who now has 12 runs batted in in his last five games, lifted a soft single just over the glove of retreating first baseman William Colantono to drive in Connor Spencer with the game-winner.

He has become almost as big a fixture in the program as squeeze bunts and ace pitchers, though few know his name and fewer still know his story. Yet almost anyone who has attended a UC Irvine baseball home game the last seven seasons, knows his voice. Keith Franklin, also known as Super Fan, may sit about three rows up from the backstop screen, between home plate and the Anteaters' on-deck circle, but he is the epicenter of UCI baseball fandom. Chanting incessantly, eliciting giggles with his sometimes nonsensical nicknames for players, always relentlessly positive about his Anteaters, yet unflinchingly respectful of the opponent, the 46-year-old Costa Mesa resident continually stirs a notoriously sedate collection of ticket holders.
