The elegant gals of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County came together to host a tea at AnQi in South Coast Plaza in advance of the society's upcoming 2012 gala benefit. They are calling the gala, which will take place in the Samueli Theater at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on March 9, "A Night of Broadway at the Philharmonic Supper Club. " Gala chairs Marsha Anderson and Marta Bhathal will transform the Samueli into a fabulous nightclub atmosphere. Guests will begin the evening with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner catered by Patina.

Guests began arriving about 6 p.m., entering South Coast Plaza at the enormous black and white glass-encased Bloomingdale's Wing. On a recent Thursday night on the Orange Coast, 12 people dedicated to Serving People in Need (SPIN) were welcomed to dinner at the chic Asian bistro AnQi, opposite Bloomie's. The men came in jacket and tie and the ladies wore summer dresses and proper heels. Fashion still can remain a sign of respect in a very relaxed world. Elizabeth An , the impressive restaurateur who along with her mother, Helene , and extended family have created a celebrated dining experience centered around their refined Vietnamese fusion cuisine at House of An restaurants in San Francisco, Beverly Hills and Costa Mesa, welcomed her guests who had come together with a serious purpose.

The Art Institute of California partnered with AnQi by Crustacean at South Coast Plaza to present an annual student fashion show billed as "Cool Days Haute Nights. " The June 14 fashion dinner, held in the stunning dining room created by the talented Elizabeth An of AnQi, featured a Paris-themed runway show. Student designers and models displayed their fashion creations, parading on a 60-foot glass catwalk that bisected the restaurant. Some 300 local fashionistas began the evening with a champagne cocktail reception and sampled AnQi's signature appetizers, including their famous garlic noodles, while student designers were busy putting finishing touches on the runway show.

About $15,000 was raised for culinary programs and student scholarships at the recent Friends of James Beard Dinner held at AnQi by Crustacean in South Coast Plaza, a news release said. Guest chef Daniel Rose collaborated with master chef Helene An and chef de Cuisine Ron Lee to create a six-course meal for 170 attendees for the event in May. The James Beard Foundation asks the restaurant hosting the dinner to donate $7,500. Elizabeth An, chief executive of House of An, which owns and operates AnQi, made a personal matching donation of $7,500, according to the news release.

His film and television credits for costume design run the gamut from the classics to the comics. He is Maxwell Barr , originally from Sydney, Australia, a man who has dedicated life and career to the world of fashion design. Today, he teaches and lectures worldwide, predominantly on his own particular passion: the 18th-century French royal court. Among his favorite subjects: the style and fashion sense of Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV's notorious mistress.

It is the Oscar celebration for the culinary world. Known as the Friends of James Beard Benefit Dinner, an annual tribute to the culinary arts named for the late famous American chef was presented May 1 in Costa Mesa at the incomparable AnQi by Crustacean. Some 170 guests came together under the auspices of Master Chef Helene An and her daughter, the indefatigable Elizabeth An , to experience a once-in-a-lifetime six-course menu created by international culinary star and guest chef for the evening Daniel Rose . For those in the know, Rose, an American-born son of the great city of Chicago, is today considered the toast of Paris as owner of the wildly popular Spring Restaurant.

The stunning contemporary Bottega Veneta boutique at South Coast Plaza closed to the public last Thursday evening for a cocktail reception to introduce its spring 2014 line. In-store events in recent years have become serious social, business and charitable gatherings. In one sense, such parties are something of a cultural phenomenon. Who turns out, what charitable causes benefit, how the retail and business communities react to the product on display all add up. Success is often measured by the number of guests taking out the American Express Platinum Card to validate the experience.

" The evening of gourmet food and wine benefiting Serving People in Need (SPIN) unfolded Saturday at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort, Huntington Beach. The spectacular benefit, produced by the board of directors of SPIN chaired by Al DeGrassi , executive vice president of Plaza Bank, in association with Jean Wegener , executive director of the SPIN staff, attracted a sold-out crowd of nearly 300 guests in black tie raising an impressive $190,000 net. The money will fund SPIN programs aiding Orange County homeless and working poor citizens.

One of America's most celebrated restaurateurs and chefs, Charlie Palmer , this week fronted a gathering of culinary critics in a private dining room of his Costa Mesa establishment at South Coast Plaza. Palmer, joining his local master of the kitchen, Chef Seakyeong Kim , welcomed to the table some 20 local celebs, including Newport's own Jamie Gwen and longtime O.C. dining authority Fifi Chao , of the Orange County Business Journal. The Wednesday afternoon confab marked the publication of South Coast Plaza's spring issue of Taste magazine, featuring the "au courant" voice on local dining.

Celebrating in great style the Chinese New Year 4710, the Year of the Water Dragon, hostess Elizabeth An of AnQi in South Coast Plaza invited some 50 local VIPs to a luncheon in her private dining room. An was joined by David Grant and Werner Escher of South Coast Plaza hosting the affair at a spectacular banquet table. It was festooned with multiple arrangements of red blossoms, all symbolizing good luck in the coming year. Dining publicist to the stars Lee Healy greeted arriving patrons, including the local legend Gloria Zigner prior to luncheon service, which consisted of four courses, each designed to bless the Year of the Water Dragon with good fortune.
