UC Irvine pitcher Danny Bibona has been named first-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Bibona, a junior, is 11-1 with a 2.65 earned-run average heading into his start tonight in the top-ranked Anteaters’ NCAA Regional opener against visiting Fresno State, at 8. The 6-foot, 160-pound left-hander went 7-0 in Big West Conference play to earn the conference’s Pitcher of the Year award. His consistent excellence helped UCI (43-13) claim its first Big West crown.

UC Irvine senior outside hitter Kelly Wing has been named Big West Conference Player of the Week in women's volleyball for the second time this season. Wing, an All-American as a junior, led the Anteaters to a comeback victory against Cal State Northridge Oct. 23. She collected 34 kills, including three game-winners. She also had three aces. After the Anteaters battled back from an 11-3 deficit in Game 5 to tie the score at 13, Wing had three straight kills for a 16-14 win. Over two matches, including a loss to University of the Pacific Oct. 22, Wing averaged 6.6 kills per game and 2.6 digs.

An All-Sunset League returner at receiver, he is being counted upon to make a lot of big plays. A running back and linebacker, Coach Dave White terms him one of the top athletes on the team. A linebacker with a great nose for the ball, he should be a defensive catalyst. An offensive lineman with developed pass-blocking skills, he will double as the Chargers' kicker. The strongest player on the team, he is expected to be a key on the offensive and defensive lines.

All-American outside hitter Kelly Wing was named Division I All-West region as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association Tuesday. The honor is Wing's second and she is one of nine representatives from the Big West Conference to be recognized by the AVCA this season. Long Beach State's Alexis Crimes was named Region Freshman of the Year. Wing owns the top three spots in season kills and attempts and holds over half of the top 10 marks in attempts and kills in the match annals.

UC Irvine junior starting pitcher Scott Gorgen has been named a Rivals.com preseason second-team All-American. Gorgen, the lone representative from the Big West Conference, picked up his third preseason All-American honor this year after receiving recognition from Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn. in December. Gorgen enjoyed a banner year in 2007, winning 13 games to finish tied for third in the nation in wins. The right-hander had six complete games, including three complete-game shutouts, and posted a 2.83 earned-run avearge.

He chronicled Newport Beach's history, and in doing so became a lasting part of it. James Person "Jim" Felton, who died earlier this month, was prolific as a writer, editor and advertiser. But he was equally, if not more, successful as a volunteer, spending time with such diverse groups as Orange County Philharmonic Society, the Orange County chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the Oasis Senior Center, United Way, the Boy Scout and Girl Scout councils, as well as the Forest Fire Prevention Campaign.

IRVINE — UC Irvine pitchers Scott Gorgen and Eric Pettis were named American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Sporting Goods All-Americans with Gorgen named to the first team and Pettis the third team. Gorgen and Pettis were also selected as first-team West Region honorees by the ABCA while shortstop Ben Orloff was tabbed a second-team choice. Gorgen led the Anteaters with a 12-3 record, posting the third-highest number of victories in the nation at the conclusion of the season.

UC Irvine women’s soccer coach Scott Juniper had waited more than 85 minutes for a goal from his Anteaters in Sunday’s Big West Conference road clash against UC Riverside. So, when the Highlanders fouled a UCI player in the 18-yard box, prompting a penalty kick opportunity for the visitors, Juniper was in no rush to make his next move. “We were all looking for [sophomore midfielder] Milana [Shabestari] to take the spot kick and then we realized she was on the bench,” Juniper said after freshman Judy Christopher stepped up and drilled the PK for a 1-0 victory.

LOS ANGELES — UC Irvine senior Julian Eison won the high jump with a mark of 7 feet, 1/2 -inch in the Cal/Nevada Championships Saturday at UCLA’s Drake Stadium. That mark ties him for No. 2 in UCI history with Matt Farmer (1990) and Jon Wratten (2007). Senior Natasha Wardley finished second in the long jump with a mark of 19-5, the third-best mark in Anteater history. Danielle Watson of UCLA won the event at 20-7. In other men’s finals, Lasalle Mitchell placed fourth in the long jump at 22-3, while Greg Thompson finished ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes, 39.28 seconds.

IRVINE — Scott Gorgen is wiping out campus hunger one start at a time, not to mention making some serious inroads in the school’s pitching record book. Gorgen, a junior All-American pitcher for UC Irvine, struck out a career-high 14 Friday in seven innings to lead the No. 5-ranked Anteaters (24-7, 6-4 in the Big West Conference) to a 7-2 conference victory over visiting UC Riverside before 630 at Anteater Ballpark. The 14 strikeouts, under an ongoing UCI promotion, provided all in attendance with the right to trade their ticket stubs for a free chili dog at a local fast-food restaurant.

I'm opposed to giving the money ($110 million from the bond; $53 million in matching funds, contributed by your fellow taxpayers from around the state; $163 million total) to this particular school board. "I have asked for two things: accountability -- quite different from the apology some folks believe I want -- and some financial history that will show taxpayers this board is capable of administrating $163 million in public funds.

They were the defending CIF Southern Section Division VI champions, unbeaten, with more than two dozen returnees, and hopes were high as the 1989 high school football season approached. Yet they would put their coach, Dave Holland, on an elevator ride for the ages. Corona del Mar's Sea Kings, 12-0-2 a year earlier, were beaten in their season opener, beaten in their league opener, beaten in the Battle of the Bay showdown with Newport Harbor and finished fourth in the Sea View League with a nondescript 2-3 record.
