LOS ANGELES - The six-on-five is supposed to be an advantageous situation in water polo. But it was a weakness Tuesday for the Newport Harbor High boys' water polo team. And the host Loyola Cubs turned their man-down situations into a strength. The result was the Sailors' first bad loss of the season, an 11-8 setback at John C. Argue Swim Stadium. Newport Harbor (8-2) certainly had its chances, but failed to convert most of them. The Sailors, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, went just four of 13 on the power play.

IRVINE - It was physical from the very start. Players from the Newport Harbor High and Corona del Mar boys' water polo teams never stopped jostling for position. The game had a playoff atmosphere with CIF still a month away, and it was easy to understand why. This was the teams' first rivalry match of the year, under the lights in the title match of the S&R Sport Cup. But the Sailors did the most important thing as tempers momentarily flared up Saturday night. They went up on the scoreboard at Woollett Aquatics Center.

NEWPORT BEACH - Saturday afternoon marked Jon Walters' first time facing his former team in a high school game. Walters, now a junior at Mater Dei, transferred from Newport Harbor after his freshman year. He still has friends at Harbor. He and his sophomore brother, James, were on a 14-and-under club team with Sailors juniors Dan Stevens and Curtis Fink that won the Speedo Cup. In the water, it's a different matter for the Newport Beach resident. "Personal relationships don't mean anything in the game," said Jon Walters, who was declared ineligible his sophomore year by the CIF Southern Section after the transfer.

As the two prepare for the stretch run of their final season with the CdM girls' soccer team, they each made a big decision regarding their future after high school on Wednesday. In the next stage of their lives, they won't be on the same team. Alvarado and O'Connor still shared a special moment as they signed national letters of intent with the UCLA and UC Santa Barbara women's soccer programs, respectively.

Local high school water polo teams tend to have tempered expectations at the Junior Olympics, going up against other clubs that are basically all-star teams drawing from several different schools. The Newport Beach Water Polo Club's 18-and-under boys flipped that script at this year's USA Water Polo Junior Olympics. Big time. Newport Beach, made up mostly of Newport Harbor High players, took bronze Tuesday at Stanford University. The locals defeated Foothill, 8-4, in the third-place match.
