NEWPORT BEACH - On one of the hottest days of the year, at least there was a nice breeze on the Newport Harbor High pool deck. The action in the Battle of the Bay boys' water polo scrimmage still sizzled early on. Seven exclusions were called in the first quarter, six of those on Corona del Mar. The physical nature helped the host Sailors, who scored three early goals on their power play. Newport Harbor never trailed and outscored the Sea Kings in the scrimmage, 11-7.

NEWPORT BEACH - The high-tech scoreboard is not currently working at the Newport Harbor High pool. The score was kept at the table during Tuesday afternoon's nonleague game against Long Beach Wilson. Each time one of the teams found the back of the net, someone at the scorer's desk flipped over a red or blue number to show the updated tally. Every so often someone would walk over from the bleachers to glance at the score. In the first half, it wasn't really necessary.

NEWPORT BEACH — It's an easy call for Jason Lynch. The team he likes his Newport Harbor High boys' water polo teams to scrimmage resides just on the other side of the Back Bay. Yes, it's rival Corona del Mar. "It's great," Lynch said after the teams scrimmaged for five periods Wednesday at Newport Harbor. "Why drive 100 miles, when you can drive one mile and get great training? We're trying to work together more frequently, I think, in the future. " The Sailors didn't have to drive at all for the scrimmage at their home pool.

Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor are the top two teams in the CIF Southern Section Division I girls' water polo coaches' poll. Each has a top goalie to anchor their defense. The Sea Kings have senior Alex Musselman, a three-year starter. The Sailors have sophomore Cleo Harrington, who continues to impress more and more with each passing game. At the next level, the Back Bay is also represented extremely well. Three of the top four NCAA Division I women's water polo programs have young women from Newport Beach in the mix at goalie.

HUNTINGTON BEACH - Rhetoric was in no short supply on the night of the first presidential debate. The front runner in the Sunset League boys' water polo race? That was to be decided in the pool, where Newport Harbor High faced Los Alamitos. A day after a tough loss, the Sailors sure showed they could bounce back. Newport Harbor hung on for an 8-7 victory over Los Al in the league opener Wednesday night at Ocean View High. The Sailors (9-2) jumped ahead in their quest for their third straight league title.

NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Harbor High boys' water polo Coach Robert Lynn said he loved the back-and-forth nature of Tuesday's game against Long Beach Wilson. The teams traded goals, field blocks and big saves for the duration. "I liked that game," Lynn said. "Even if we would have lost, I'd tell you the same thing. I wish we had that game every week for 10 months in a row. It's only going to help us get better. " Of course, Lynn also liked that the Sailors were able to come out with the victory.

CORONA DEL MAR - "Ro-bert! Ro-bert!" Corona del Mar High students used the chant a couple of different times Saturday night in the Battle of the Bay boys' water polo match. Newport Harbor Coach Robert Lynn said he didn't mind it. "They were antagonistic, which is good," Lynn said. "That's fine. That's what crowds should be like. " But the heel for the host Sea Kings turned out to be an emerging player for Newport Harbor. Ryan Warde scored his game-high fourth goal on a power play with eight seconds remaining, helping the Sailors hold on and take the rivalry match, 9-7, on Saturday night at CdM. Four goals is a career-high for Warde, who is known for being an emotional player.

IRVINE - El Toro High senior goalie Garrett Danner called it a risk. Newport Harbor Coach Robert Lynn called it a gamble. When Danner came out of the cage in the closing seconds of Wednesday night's CIF Southern Section Division I semifinal match, there were two possible outcomes. The first was that the Sailors' Dan Stevens would beat Danner in the closing seconds for the second time this year, possibly forcing overtime. The second was that Danner would steal the ball, helping ensure a Chargers victory.

NEWPORT BEACH - Nobody said the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs were going to be easy. Even when you're the No. 2 seed. The Newport Harbor High boys' water polo team got a good game from San Clemente on Wednesday evening in the first round of the playoffs. And, though the Sailors felt like they could have played better, the goal is to move on. The Sailors did, pulling away in the second quarter to earn a 14-8 victory over the Tritons at Newport Harbor High.

LOS ANGELES - The six-on-five is supposed to be an advantageous situation in water polo. But it was a weakness Tuesday for the Newport Harbor High boys' water polo team. And the host Loyola Cubs turned their man-down situations into a strength. The result was the Sailors' first bad loss of the season, an 11-8 setback at John C. Argue Swim Stadium. Newport Harbor (8-2) certainly had its chances, but failed to convert most of them. The Sailors, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, went just four of 13 on the power play.
