Andrew Fontein is close to earning a degree in business economics at UC Irvine. But it is on the soccer field where he has learned best the lessons regarding a return on one's investment. The Las Vegas native was hardly a commodity when he came to UCI as a freshman walk-on, having secured a Big West home as a backup plan after enrolling at Villanova fell through. But blessed with a confidence that knows no conscience, he trusted that talent and determination would help him shovel out from under his subterranian status on the depth chart.

IRVINE - UC Irvine senior Miguel Ibarra stood two steps outside the post-game huddle of Anteaters, coughing uncontrollably into one sweat-drenched sleeve, then the other. It was a cold-stricken Ibarra, shifted from midfield to forward about 12 minutes into the second half of a Big West Conference men's soccer home game against Cal State Northridge on Saturday, who proved to be the best medicine for a somewhat sluggish attack for the hosts. Ibarra scored one goal and generated another to help No. 7-ranked UCI earn a 2-0 triumph to take sole possession of first place in what figures to be a balanced and potent conference.

FULLERTON - For the first 66 minutes, Wednesday at Cal State Fullerton, it was better to be lucky than good. But the game's most well-deserved goal in the 67th minute proved to be a game-winner for the No. 7-ranked UC Irvine men's soccer team, which came away with a 2-1 Big West Conference victory. The win moves UCI (10-2, 2-1 in conference) into a first-place tie with Cal State Northridge and UC Davis. Both have six points (three points for a win and one for a tie). After misfiring while all alone in front of the UC Santa Barbara goal early in the second half, the mental replay of the forward's squandered scoring chance might have made for a sleepless Saturday night.
