CORONA DEL MAR - Corona del Mar High's softball team dropped a 10-0 nonleague decision to visiting La Canada Tuesday. The Sea Kings (0-3) committed four errors, and the defending CIF Division IV champion Spartans parlayed that with seven singles to post their 10 markers. Andrea Gruber, Amy Tyson and Meagan Bunney had the three CdM base hits. IRVINE - Corona del Mar High junior Alissa Zoelle, who pitched a no-hitter against Estancia Tuesday, earned her sixth win of the season and she banged out the game's only extra base hit, leading the Sea Kings to a 6-3 Pacific Coast League victory over host University Wednesday. CdM sophomore Kianna Jaye followed up Zoelle's triple with an RBI base-hit in the third inning. Corona senior Andrea Gruber also had an RBI. Zoelle struck out one and walked three, while scattering five hits to help the Sea Kings improve to 10-8, 6-2 in the PCL. Uni dropped to 2-5 in league.

Costa Mesa junior shortstop Ann Marie Topps, a second-team All-CIF Division IV performer as a sophomore, is a repeat first-team choice in the PCL. GARDEN GROVE - The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team hung with El Modena through two quarters, but lost, 61-47, in pool play of the Santiago Tournament at Santiago High Thursday. CdM senior Andrea Gruber led the Sea Kings (4-9) with 13 points, while juniors Kelliann Klein (12 points) and Madison Otterbein (11) also posted double figures. The Sea Kings trailed 27-23 at halftime but were then outscored 18-11 in the third quarter and could not recover.

SAN CLEMENTE -- The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team, playing without injured standouts Jackie McCoy and Andrea Gruber, fell 56-30 to Laguna Hills in pool play at the San Clemente Tournament Wednesday. McCoy, a junior who earned first-team All-Pacific Coast League and All-Newport-Mesa District laurels last season, strained a knee in Friday's loss to Orange Lutheran and will undergo and MRI this week, CdM Coach Elbert Davis said. Gruber, a senior returning starter, suffered a cut under her eye that is affecting her vision.

FULLERTON - Corona del Mar High's girls basketball team remains undefeated and advanced to the semifinals of the Troy Tournament with a 53-32 win over Kennedy. The Sea Kings (3-0) will play Huntington Beach tonight at 8 p.m. Kristen McCoy led CdM with 18 points and eight rebounds, and her sister Jackie McCoy scored 10. Andrea Gruber got nine points, all from three-pointers. CdM's defense held Kennedy to nine points in the first half. Junior Jackie McCoy led the Sea Kings (1-1) with 16 points, while junior Madison Otterbein added 12 and senior Courtney Kawata and junior Lucy Ramsey contributed 10 points each. CdM senior guard Andrea Gruber ignited the defense with five steals and on offense she dished out five assists and scored seven points to deal Los Amigos a loss in its opener.

Deirdre Newman NEWPORT BEACH -- Corona del Mar High School senior Jeff Lee spent his first two years on campus eating Twinkies and Ding Dongs until he received an award from the queen of Iran for work on an Iranian newspaper and book that, he said, shocked him out of his sugar stupor. "I realized that success requires sheer will and determination," Lee said. Lee went on to win second place in the Johns Hopkins National Talent Search and become an AP Scholar with Distinction while still in high school.

Barry Faulkner CORONA DEL MAR - Thursday was nostalgia night for the Corona del Mar High girls basketball team, which looked more like the squad that amassed 22 wins last year, than the one that flirted with .500 this season. The Sea Kings (14-12) used a 21-2 first-half run to take command against CIF Southern Section Division III-AA first-round visitor Ganesha, en route to a decisive 68-48 triumph. The win advances CdM to Saturday night's second-round clash at La Canada (16-10)

Steve Virgen CORONA DEL MAR - No offense Northwood High, but the Corona del Mar girls basketball team merely used the Timberwolves as practice and for fine tuning Thursday night in a Pacific Coast League game. The Sea Kings, however, were careful not to look past Northwood and accomplished victory, 53-23, in preparation for Tuesday's matchup with Estancia.
