Tom Lehman, the current money-list leader on the Champions Tour, is one of five golfing greats who have committed to this year's Toshiba Classic at Newport Beach Country Club. Hale Irwin, the Champions Tour winningest player and the Classic's only two-time champ, along with fellow World Golf Hall of Famers Nick Price and Lee Trevino are intent on playing in the 17th annual Toshiba Classic, as is former U.S. Ryder Cup team captain (2008) Paul Azinger. The Toshiba Classic takes place March 7 through 13, with tournament play the final three days.

It was the type of a tournament that could change a career, define a player. The 2008 U.S. Open stabilized Tiger Woods as an icon. The Open made Rocco Mediate everyone's favorite underdog. Mediate is well aware the tournament was a unique experience. He went on to write a book about the epic event with John Feinstein, entitled, "Are You Kidding Me?" The appropriate title described the wild tournament and amazing playoff between Tiger and Rocco. Mediate has had plenty of time to think about, "What if," yet instead he just plays on for the next tournament, the next hole.

It's that time again. The Toshiba Classic at Newport Beach Country Club March 16 through 18 marks the next Champions Tour event. When Nick Price won the Toshiba Classic last year there were two firsts he achieved. Now he's looking to accomplish another first at the 18th annual Toshiba Classic. Price will try to be the tournament's first repeat winner when the first of three rounds begin Friday at Newport Beach Country Club, where the pro-am began Monday. Price, who arrives Wednesday, will gladly take the same first-round score he had in 2011. He shot an 11-under-par 60, a Champions Tour, Toshiba Classic and course record.

It's always fun to pick a winner. It's more fun when the pick is right. Every year, I try to pick the winner of the Toshiba Classic. I've been doing it for the past six years. Only once did I get it right: Fred Couples in 2010. This year, I've decided to play it safe and name five contenders who have the clearest shot of winning the 19th annual tournament that takes place at Newport Beach Country Club from March 11 to 17. To be fair, I will make one pick, but to cover my bases, so to speak, I'll name my top five contenders.

For Corey Pavin, it was a once-in-a-lifetime shot, but he's hoping the Allianz Championship won't be his once-in-a-lifetime victory on the Champions Tour. In 34 starts on the Champions Tour, Pavin had never won. But on the 35th, something magical happened. Some of that magic took place on the par-three 14th hole at Broken Sound Golf Club in Boca Raton, Fla. on Feb. 12. Pavin had an incredible par save. He turned around his eight-iron and hit left-handed for a chip shot. That was basically the only option Pavin had as there was a tree root to the left of the ball.

Brad Faxon already has one win on the Champions Tour, but you could say he's still finding his way. Faxon, an eight-time PGA Tour winner who turned 50 seven months ago, had a troublesome start to his Toshiba Classic debut Wednesday. He showed up to Newport Beach Golf Course to play in the pro-am. One problem, the Toshiba is at Newport Beach Country Club. Not a big deal. He made it to NBCC for an interview with media and then out for his afternoon of pro-am. No harm. It goes in sync to how Faxon feels on the Champions Tour.

NEWPORT BEACH - As if John Cook needed more of an advantage at the Toshiba Classic this week. The 11-time PGA Tour winner, who grabbed his ninth victory on the Champions Tour in January, doesn't totally have an edge on the Newport Beach Country Club golf course. But it's safe to say Cook is in his comfort zone. He owns a home in nearby Corona del Mar and is just "five minutes," away from NBCC. Cook calls it a bonus, as he looks to add to his hot start on the Champions Tour this year.

In a tournament known for its generosity, a newcomer to this year’s Toshiba Classic has a streak of selflessness in him. One sentence said it all. It was toward the end of a phone conversation when Corey Pavin, U.S. Ryder Cup captain and Champions Tour rookie made one statement that struck to the core. This statement revealed the inner man. “If I don’t like the way I’m playing, I don’t want to take someone’s spot,” Pavin said Friday from Florida, where he played the Allianz Championship, finishing tied for 34th place (six-under par)

Newport Beach Country Club holds a special place in Esteban Toledo's heart. He's hoping the course will become even more meaningful this weekend. One thing's for sure, NBCC will be a place for therapy for Toledo. Toledo, a former honorary member at NBCC, revealed Wednesday his older brother, Mario, died of "health problems" last week. Mario had been planning to be in Newport Beach to watch his younger brother, Toledo said. Instead, Toledo will travel to Mexicali for the funeral.
