ALISO NIGUEL - The Newport Harbor High baseball team suffered its seventh Sea View League loss, but Sailors Coach Jim Kiefer said he saw improvement at Aliso Niguel Wednesday. With two outs, Tars senior catcher Garrett Brant hammered a three-run homer, his first of the season, in the third inning. The blast scored junior Cameron Pemstein and senior Alan Lane for a 3-2 lead. But, Aliso Niguel (10-3, 6-2 in league) grabbed two runs in the bottom of the inning and one more in the fourth to secure victory.

Flu bugs and hot Aliso Niguel shooting in the second half added up to a 77-69 loss for the visiting Eagles. "I don't like to use excuses, but we just flat out ran out of gas," Coach Rich Boyce said. "I couldn't ask any more out of my guys than what they gave out there tonight." Jason Simco led the Eagles (7-4) with 20 points, while Darshaun Garner added 15. ALISO VIEJO - Newport Harbor High senior Mike Jones went 2 for 3 to account for half of the Sailors' hits in a 16-1 Sea View League baseball loss Wednesday at Aliso Niguel. Andre Pinesett, who drove in Lu Castillo for the Tars' only run in the sixth, and Mike McLean also had singles for the Sailors (4-16, 0-9 in league). ALISO VIEJO -- Lindly Wren scored the winning goal in the 52nd minute as Newport Harbor High upset defeating Aliso Niguel, 2-1, in a Sea View League girls' soccer game Tuesday. Aliso Niguel (19-2-3, 6-1-1 in league) is ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division I. Emily Ohlhaver had the first goal for Newport Harbor (7-12-2, 3-4-1). Goalkeeper Mary Giberson had 12 saves to preserve the lead. "We beat [Corona del Mar] in the Battle of the Bay, but this is definitely up there," Newport Harbor Coach Phil D'Agostino said.

NEWPORT BEACH - Senior Nicole Ashton scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in Thursday's 50-33 loss for Newport Harbor High's girls basketball team, ending the Sailors' season. Newport (4-22, 0-8 in league) led after the first quarter before Aliso Niguel (14-11, 2-5) took control. Evita Castillo joined in on the rebounding feast, grabbing 10 boards to go along with her three points. Athena Vasquez and Lisa Gerlach contributed to the offense, each chipping in with five points.

NEWPORT BEACH - The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team used a 14-5 run the first seven minutes of the final quarter to cut visiting Aliso Niguel's lead five, but the Wolverines held on for a 37-30 Sea View League triumph Tuesday. Freshman Jillianne Whitfield and junior Evita Castillo shared scoring honors for the Sailors with 11 points apiece, while Castillo added 14 rebounds. Sophomore Lindsay Woller chipped in nine rebounds and sophomore Athena Vasquez added four points for the Tars, who fell to 2-17, 0-4 in league.
