NEWPORT BEACH - The Dodgers used 10 hits and some timely defense and pitching to hold off the Indians, 9-5, in Newport Harbor Baseball Association Mustang Division action last weekend. Cameron Chase, Peter Kinney and Stefan Brysha each had two hits to pace the Dodger attack, while Charlie O'Desky, Holden Gray-Keough, R.J. D'Cruz and Drew Littlefair. Littlefair also scored three runs, while Bryan Rhodes added a key run for the Dodgers. Leading the Dodgers' defense was Marshall Stamper, Eric Hansen and Braden Cluck.

NEWPORT BEACH - Alex Rios went 3 for 3 with five RBIs to lead the Red Sox past the Devil Rays, 8-6, in Newport Harbor Baseball Association Mustang Division (ages 11-12) Monday afternoon. Ryan Albert went 2 for 2 with three RBIs for the Red Sox, while Bobby Okvist, Randall Hause, Max Royer and Jeff Hamilton each added key hits. Albert, Rios and Eric Holland led the Red Sox pitching staff, while Luke Fischer, Jesse Hickey and Sean Magnano added stellar all-around play.

NEWPORT BEACH - Garrett Gordon went 2 for 3 including a grand slam to lead the Indians over the Dodgers, 14-3, in Newport Harbor Baseball Association Bronco Division action (ages 11-12). Gordon was also strong on the mound, striking out five Dodgers over two innings of no-hit relief, while Andrew Kaban went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Indians' hurler Nathan Todd pitched three shutout innings with four strikeouts, while the defense was led by Kaban and T.J. Fish.

A quartet of pitchers led the Indians to a 7-4 win over the Mets, in Newport Harbor Baseball Association Bronco Division (ages 11-12) action. Nathan Todd pitched three shutout innings and struck out four, while relievers Andrew Kuban, Garrett Gordon and Kyle Rohan combined for six strikeouts the rest of the way. Gordon, Brennan Davis, John Razzano, Michael Menninger, Robert Rubio, Josh Jobse and T.J. Fish each run-producing hits for the Indians. On defense, Robby Joslin and Kyle Rohan made solid plays, while the bats of Jackson Massingill and Robbie Joslin added some late-inning production.

Alex Rios' triple in the bottom of the sixth inning proved the difference in an 8-6 victory for the Red Sox over the Angels in Newport Harbor Baseball Association Bronco Division (11-12-year-old) play. The game saw three lead changes and two ties, with the Red Sox pushing across three runs in their half of the sixth inning. The Red Sox led, 4-2, after three innings, but the Angels came back with three in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Christian Anderson led off with a double and Blake Davey later knocked him in with an RBI single.

Then the Sailors went “Green” as in Cody Green in relief late, trying to save the baseball game. The move failed to salvage the Beach Pit Classic Championship Wednesday. Newport Harbor took a two-run lead into the seventh inning. Things turned hazardous, three straight infield singles burned the Sailors.

Steve Virgen Everything seemed to come together for the Corona del Mar Cardinals, who depended on pitching to defeat the Newport Harbor Red Wings, 3-0, in the semifinals, a.k.a. the elimination game, of the Newport-Mesa Pony tournament Saturday at Mariners Park. CdM pitchers Patrick Brennan and Steven Manning combined for a two-hit shutout and the Cardinals got the better of the Red Wings with three unearned runs. The Cardinals will face the Corona del Mar Angels today at noon at Eastbluff Park.

Adding to the Red Sox' offense were Daniel Norris and Alex Rios. Norris went 1 for 3 with a run scored and Rios also scored once with an RBI. The Red Sox were led on defense by third baseman Andrew Taylor and second baseman Trevor Noon. Moskovits also pitched three no-hit innings, striking out eight.
