College Roundup: Surrey shines in UCI shutout

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 4, Grand Canyon 0

Sophomore left-hander Elliott Surrey threw a four-hit shutout to give the host Anteaters their second complete game in as many days in the nonconference game Saturday.

Surrey struck out six and did not walk a batter to improve to 2-2. He threw 97 pitches.

Junior third baseman Taylor Sparks tripled in a run in the first and scored on a single by junior catcher Jerry McClanahan.

Singles by Kris Paulino, Mikey Duarte and Adam Alcantara produced a run for the hosts (15-7) in the fifth and McClanahan doubled in a run in the eighth to cap the eight-hit attack.

McClanahan and Sparks were two for four.

Grand Canyon, for which former UCI assistant Nathan Choate and former UCI player Gregg Wallis are assistant coaches, is 10-11.

The three-game series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.

Doubleheader

PHOENIX — Freshman Brandon Sandoval went a combined six for nine with five runs batted in to lead visiting Vanguard to a Golden State Athletic Conference sweep over Arizona Christian on Saturday.

Sandoval lifted his team-leading batting average 26 points to .388 and also took over the team lead with 24 RBIs. HE was three for five with three RBIs in a 12-4 Game 1 triumph and was three for four with two RBIs in the 4-1 Game 2 win.

John Schwer was two for four with two RBIs and Nick Rodda was two for three with one RBI in the opener, while John Collins was two for three with one RBI and Taylor McKnight was two for four with one RBI in the second game.

Clayton Voechting allowed one run on 10 hits in a seven-inning complete game in Game 2 to improve to 4-2.

Eddie Rivera (4-1) got the win and Richard Perry earned his second save in the first game.

Vanguard (20-11, 13-8 in conference) swept the three-game series against the Firestorm (10-20, 4-17).

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

PHOENIX — Alexandra Olvera threw a five-inning one-hit shutout to help visiting Vanguard University sweep Golden State Athletic Conference rival Arizona Christian on Saturday.

Olvera struck out three and walked three in a 10-0 Game 2 win that followed the Lions' 2-1 opening-game win in seven innings.

Taylor Hallahan and Summer Penner drove in runs with hits in the opener.

Breanne Gomez was three for three with three runs batted in in the second game, in which both Shelby Kuryllo and Haley Croce were two for three with two RBIs.

Taylor Wilson and Brittany Cooper were two for three with one RBI apiece and Hallahan was two for four in Game 2.
