Community & Clubs: Mustering the movies for a cause

January 28, 2014|By Jim de Boom

"The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor is happy to report that its annual movie event, held last fall at the Lido Theatre, was quite successful both socially and financially," reports Ed Romeo, club public relations chair.

"The major purpose of the movie event is to raise funds for the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center. At a recent luncheon meeting at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, the Exchange Club presented a check for $20,000 to the center staff. The Exchange Club played a major role in the founding of the center and has supported its programs both financially and with volunteers for many years."

Daily Pilot Community & Clubs Hall of Fame

Save June 6 for the sixth annual Daily Pilot Community & Clubs Hall of Fame luncheon being held at noon at American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291 in Newport Beach.

Ten outstanding volunteers were honored at the 2013 Hall of Fame luncheon. Honored were Steve Grant, Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa; Norm Witt III, Newport-Irvine Rotary Club; Bill Simons, Kiwanis Club of Newport Beach/Corona del Mar; Joanne Johnston, Assistance League of Newport-Mesa; Dick Dickson, Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa; Deane Bottorf, Exchange Club of Newport Harbor; Don Oldis, Post 291; Sue Seager, Harbor Mesa Lions Club; Jack Hammett, Sons of the American Legion; and Post 291 Commander Jess Lawson.

Do you know someone involved in a community group, service club or congregation who has given their time, talent and even treasure and deserves to be inducted into the Daily Pilot Hall of Fame? How about an individual in a congregation that provides service to the needy in our communities? How about the volunteers at the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, Share Our Selves or the Sister City Committee?

Costa Mesa and Newport Beach have some great volunteers who don't make the society pages but volunteer out of love for the community. For more information, send me an email at jdeboom@aol.com.
