Newport Beach police on Thursday night released a composite of one of two men suspected of trying to lure a 14-year-old girl to their car.

Police need help identifying the men or finding the car, according to a news release.

On Wednesday morning, the girl was sitting on the front steps of her home in the 600 block of Iris Avenue in Corona del Mar when one of the men approached her.

He had been the passenger in a dark green Subaru wagon that had driven past the property but then backed up.

The man asked the girl for directions to a fast-food restaurant, and when she said she couldn't help, he tried to get her to go to the car and look at a map, police said.

Even when the girl refused, he kept trying to talk her into returning to the car with him, police said.

It wasn't until the teen picked up a large stick to protect herself that he got back into the car and told the driver to leave, according to officials.

Police describe the passenger as Latino, about 50 years old, 5 feet 10 and 170 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He sported a goatee and wore white running shoes, jeans with holes in them and a brown inside-out T-shirt.

The four-door wagon had a white oval sticker and the word "Anaheim" on the back window. The license plate started with 6 and ended with 4, police said.

The driver did not exit the car and police have little information about him.

Police asked that anyone with information call Det. Penny Freeman at (949) 644-3776 or the department's hotline at (800) 550-NBPD. Anonymous messages are allowed.
