High School Roundup: CMHS XC teams advance to CIF

BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY

Orange Coast League finals

ORANGE — Costa Mesa High senior Brett Bermudez finished second in 15 minutes, 20.45 seconds and led the Mustangs to a second-place finish Wednesday at Irvine Regional Park.

Costa Mesa qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division 4 preliminaries Nov. 16 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Juniors Anuare Magana (sixth in 15:38.44), John Hernandez (11th in 16:36.21) and Andres Avelar (21st in 17:11.36), as well as freshman Francisco Ruiz (22nd in 17:32.72) also competed for the Mustangs.

Laguna Beach won the meet, and Breakers senior Veda Rebollar came in first in 15:18.33.

Estancia was sixth out of the six teams.

Junior Alberto Espindola led the Eagles, finishing 30th in 18:23.38.

GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY

Orange Coast League finals

ORANGE — Costa Mesa High freshman Emily Olvera finished eighth in 19:14.42 to lead the Mustangs to a third-place finish Wednesday at Irvine Regional Park.

Costa Mesa qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division 4 preliminaries Nov. 16 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Sophomore Gabriela Perez (13th in 19:40.11), freshman Bianca Duarte (22nd in 21:01.12), senior Daysi Vazquez (23rd in 21:06.93) and senior Jocelyn Gutierrez (25th in 21:11.80) also competed for the Mustangs.

Natalie Kimball of Laguna Beach won the race in 18:19.32 and the Breakers captured the league title.

Estancia finished fifth, led by sophomore Viri Rios, who finished 15th in 20:12.05.

FIELD HOCKEY

Harvard-Westlake 1, Newport Harbor 0

STUDIO CITY — The Sailors were turned away in sudden-death overtime when Harvard-Westlake scored with 10 seconds left Wednesday in the semifinals of the Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions.

Newport Harbor (19-7) will play for third place against Westminster Saturday at Moorpark College. Goalie Cailynn Smethurst stood out for the Tars with 14 saves.

The Sailors had advanced to the semifinals after beating La Verne Bonita, 2-1, in overtime Monday at Davidson Field.

Jordan Blanchfield and Alex Palmer scored, while Cameron Dewan produced an assist.

Harvard Westlake and Edison will play for the title

Academy League finals

The Sage Hill School doubles team of Briana Rayhaun and Connie Yu reached the title match and qualified Wednesday for the CIF Individuals at The Tennis Club Newport Beach.
