School board to discuss building budget

July 09, 2013

School officials will discuss Tuesday night what major building projects they want to focus on in the future.

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District board of trustees will take up the topic at its 7 p.m. meeting, partially because of a one-time, $16 million contribution to the district's capital improvement budget, according to a staff report.

The money comes from California's decision to do away with local redevelopment agencies and distribute their assets to local governmental bodies, such as school districts, according to the report.

The district estimates there's about $100 million worth of capital improvement projects that have been requested by constituents or are otherwise needed, some of which could be completed with the $16 million plus other reserves.

Any decisions Tuesday night won't be binding, according to the report. Board members will simply be directing staff on which projects to pursue.

The school board meets at the District Education Center, 2985 Bear St. in Costa Mesa.
