Donations revamp Newport Harbor High fields

May 21, 2013

Two athletics fields at Newport Harbor High School will get face lifts over the next two months, funded mostly by donations of more than $80,000.

Work started Wednesday to re-lay sod at Harbor High's Davidson Field, according to a Newport-Mesa Unified School District official.

Over the next two weeks, crews will replace the field's turf between the hash marks for the length of the football field, said Jim Lamond, the school district's director of facilities development, planning and design.

"This is the area that gets the most play," Lamond wrote in an email.

That revamp will cost about $32,400, he said, with about half the cost coming out of the district's pockets.

Field hockey boosters, girls' soccer boosters, boys' lacrosse boosters, the school's student government body and girls' soccer team pulled together $15,000 to contribute to the project, according to the district.

The second project is a nearby practice football field that will be completely re-sodded, Lamond said.

An anonymous $69,000 donation is funding that project.

Work on the practice field will start July 25 and also last about two weeks, Lamond said.
