College Roundup: UCI's Aikhionbare 2nd in shotput

NORTHRIDGE — UC Irvine sophomore Itos Aikhionbare finished second in the shotput with a throw of 50 feet 11 1/2 inches during the first day of the two-day competition at Cal State Northridge on Friday.

UCI's Carlotta Pham finished sixth in the 10,000 meters.

Megan Benson ran a 14.07 in the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries and advanced to Saturday's final. The time is the fifth fastest in UCI history.

UCI's Paige Bushnell also moved on to the 100 hurdles final (14.18).

KayC Wharton qualified for the final in the 400 hurdles (61.14), as did Kaulyn Lee-McNeill (61.52) and Bushnell (61.78).

UCI's Sakia Sailinuu (4:35.43), Kaycee Holcomb (4:37.04) and Samia Sailinuu (4:39.41) each advanced to Saturday's final in the 1,500 meters after the prelims.

Sailinuu also advanced to the 800 final (2:14.55).

NORTHRIDGE — UC Irvine senior Nick Jennings finished third in the pole vault with a leap of 16 feet 5½ inches on the first day of the two-day competition at Cal State Northridge on Friday.

UCI's Stephen Brown placed sixth (15-11¾) in the pole vault.

Mason Miller finished fifth in the discus throw (164-6) for the Anteaters.

UCI's Kyle Hubbard (55.14 seconds) and Mike Graf (55.49) each qualified for Saturday's final in the 400-meter hurdles after the preliminaries.

UCI's Jake Williams advanced to the final in the 800 (1:54.60).

WOMEN'S GOLF

NCAA West Regional

PALO ALTO — UC Irvine freshman Luciane Lee shot an even-par 71 on the second round of the NCAA West Regional at the Stanford Golf Course to move into contention for one of two individual spots at the NCAA Championships.

Lee, who is playing as an individual, moved from 36th position to 17th with a two-round total of 145 (74-71).

Once the top eight teams are determined, the top two players from a school that has not advanced will also qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Senior Michelle Park is in 89th place with a 36-hole total 157 (78-79).

Both players begin the final 18 holes Saturday at 8:25 a.m. with Lee starting at the first tee and Park from the 10th tee.
