Council to discuss east, west sides

Several meetings include redevelopment, planning goals, pensions and city's general plan.

The coming week is a busy one for Costa Mesa government, with at least seven meetings scheduled, two of which include the City Council going over future goals and objectives with other city groups.

The council and Planning Commission are set to discuss planning goals in a joint meeting at 4:30 p.m. in Conference Room 1A on the first floor of City Hall, 77 Fair Drive.

The commission in its regular meeting at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers will go over various developments in the Eastside, including a proposed five-unit condominium complex at 2573 Elden Ave. and two homes on an empty 8,250-square-foot lot at 2590 Orange Ave.

City staff are recommending that the commission deny the Elden project, partially because the developer is seeking an unjustifiable variance from the city's open-space requirements.

Some live-work condominiums on Industrial Way, near the city's southwestern edge bordering Newport Beach, are also on the docket. The council discussed IntraCorp's development last month, which prompted concerns about the Westside project's population density, parking and home ownership versus renters.

The proposed development contains about 60 units along Industrial Way and on an adjacent Newport Boulevard lot that currently houses Anchor Trailer Port, a mobile home park.

On Tuesday, the council heads back to Conference Room 1A for a goal-setting joint meeting with the Parks and Recreation Commission at 4:30 p.m.

The council will meet later, at 6 p.m., in closed session to discuss labor agreements with various city employee associations.

On Wednesday, the newly formed Pension Oversight Committee takes over Conference Room 1A for its regularly scheduled session at 4:30 p.m.

Then across the way in the Police Department headquarters' Emergency Operations Center, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., is a workshop about the city's general plan and housing element, a citywide goal of providing adequate housing for all residents while maintaining a high standard of living.

The general plan, according to city documents, "is the primary source of long-range planning and policy direction intended to guide growth and preserve the quality of life within the community."

At 6 p.m. Thursday in the Council Chambers, the city will host a session about the street closure from June 27 to July 1 for its 60th anniversary celebration this summer. The party, planned for June 28 to 30, will incorporate street festival atmosphere and also use a portion of the Orange County Fairgrounds near City Hall.

A nearly half-mile stretch of Fair Drive, between Fairview Road and Newport Boulevard, will be closed from June 28 to July 1.
