High School Roundup: Beek helps Newport beat Notre Dame

Junior defender scores his first goal of the season to lead Sailors boys' soccer team to wild-card win in Division 1.

SHERMAN OAKS — Junior Chaz Beek made his first goal of the season count, as his strike in the 75th minute proved to be the Newport Harbor High boys' soccer team's game-winner Wednesday.

Beek's goal, which came off an assist from junior Henry Ramirez, lifted the Sailors to a 1-0 victory over Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in a wild-card match of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Newport Harbor (13-8-4), which finished tied for third in the Sunset League, will play at El Toro (24-1-1), the Sea View League champion, on Friday at 3 p.m.

Beek, a defender, made good on a corner kick from Ramirez. Goalie Osiel Porcayo had seven saves in his shutout.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Maranatha 55, Costa Mesa 47

COSTA MESA — The Mustangs led, 38-32, after three quarters, but couldn't sustain their lead and were eliminated after the first-round loss in the CIF Southern Section Division 4-AA playoffs Wednesday night.

Sean Comer led Costa Mesa (10-17) with 15 points and six rebounds. Kyle Hefner added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists and Andrew Wright had seven points for the Mustangs, an at-large entry that finished fourth in the Orange Coast League.

Tahquitz 67, Estancia 50

HEMET — Josh Mendoza scored 25 points, including five-three pointers, for the Eagles, who were eliminated after their first-round loss in the CIF Southern Section Division 3-A playoffs Wednesday night.

Matt Jarmacz (seven points, four rebounds), Ben Beck (11 points, three rebounds), Chad Fackler (three rebounds, three assists) and Martin Harry (five points) also contributed for Estancia (7-19), which was an at-large team that finished fifth in the Orange Coast League.

Crossroads 67, Sage Hill 46

SANTA MONICA — Jack Williamson scored a game-high 19-points for the Lightning, who were eliminated after the first-round loss in the CIF Southern Section Division 4-A playoffs Wednesday night.

Sage Hill finishes the season at 10-16. The Lightning were an at-large team that finished tied for fourth in the Academy League.
