College Roundup: UCI's Tsurumoto scores career-high 27 points in win

UC Irvine 64, Hawaii 52

IRVINE — Junior guard Jennifer Tsurumoto scored a career-high 27 points for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference game at the Bren Events Center Saturday.

Tsurumoto shot seven for 13 from the floor, including hitting three three-pointers and was 10 of 12 from the free-throw line. She also recorded four assists, a block and steal in 37 minutes of action. Junior guard Kelly Meggs added 12 points, while junior forward Camille Buckley had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds for UCI (6-17, 2-9 in conference). Methlyn Onogomuho pitched in six points and three steals and Pernilla Hanson and Lauren Spinazze each had three points in the win. Jasmine Bernard added two points and Mokun Fajemisin had five rebounds.


The Anteaters shot 60% from the floor in the second half (12-20) and ended the night 42.9% (21-49) overall. UCI hit eight three-pointers, while Hawaii went four for 20 from three-point range. The Rainbow Wahine shot 31% (18-58) from the field and 70.6% (12-17) from the line. Hawaii out-rebounded UCI, 42-33.

Hawaii is 11-11, 7-4.

UCI plays at UC Riverside Thursday at 7 p.m.


Vanguard 101, Arizona Christian 50

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Nicole Ballestero scored a game-high 39 points for the No. 3-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Maree Drennan (15 points, 11 rebounds), Esther Timmermans (eight points, 16 rebounds), Leigha Bednar (13 points) and Chelsea Alfafara (12 points) also contributed for Vanguard (17-2, 8-2 in conference).

Arizona Christian is 4-18, 0-10.


Orange Coast 77, Santa Ana 57

SANTA ANA — Jenna Arnett had 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conferece game Friday night.

The Pirates (12-14, 3-7 in conference) outrebounded the Dons (9-17, 1-9) 55-33 in the game, enabling the guests to pick up easy points down low on first and second opportunities.

Coast notched 29 second-chance points and scored 24 points in the paint, with Arnett leading the way.

The sophomore forward finished the game 11 of 18 from the floor and five for five from the free-throw line.

Caitlin Bunting scored 14 points and Dayanara Armenta had 13 points.

Michelle Angel had seven points, eight rebounds and seven assists.



Hawaii 78, UC Irvine 72

HONOLULU, Hawaii — Hawaii capitalized on a 14-0 run in the second half to erase a seven-point deficit in the Big West Conference game Saturday night.
