The Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club (BCYC) will host its seventh annual Corinthian Cup Regatta this weekend, with about 80 junior sailors expected to participate.
Five to seven races — depending on the wind — are planned for Saturday and Sunday in Newport Harbor.
All junior sailors from Southern California Youth Yacht Racing Assn. member clubs are eligible to participate in the race. A majority of the sailors will be competing from four yacht clubs in the area, including Bahia Corinthian, the Balboa Yacht Club, Newport Harbor Yacht Club and Lido Island Yacht Club, said Shannon Heausler, junior sailing director at BCYC.
"It's a very unique event in that sailors aren't just competing on an individual level," she said. "They're competing for their yacht club."
Teams will compete to accumulate the most points, so the more sailors on a team, the higher chance that team has of winning, she said. The top team will be awarded The Corinthian Cup, and each of the team's members will receive Olympic style gold medals.
