Costa Mesa city clerk resigns

July 15, 2012

Costa Mesa City Clerk Julie Folcik submitted her resignation Friday, a city official confirmed.

Folcik, who had been with the city for about 10 years, was suspended with pay in March after she missed a deadline to submit Costa Mesa's proposed charter for the June primary ballot.

Reached at her home in Long Beach, Folcik said it was difficult deciding to leave the city of Costa Mesa.

"It gives me something to think about," she said. "Sometimes I feel that God creates new space where new opportunities can present themselves. ... It was hard to get to this point. It was just a really hard decision to come to on my own."

The city petitioned the Orange County Superior Court soon after to force the measure onto the ballot, but failed.

Emails between Folcik and the Orange County Registrar showed she had been reminded of the deadline several times. The city launched an investigation into the mistake after she was suspended. The results of that investigation were not immediately available.

The city hired Brenda Green, Stanton's former city clerk, to serve in Folcik's place in the interim.

The city charter is now expected to be on November's ballot.
