Community & Clubs: Congratulations to the Hall of Fame inductees

June 19, 2012|By Jim de Boom

It was a good week in Newport Beach!

I spent a lot of time in Newport, and it was most enjoyable. On June 13, there was an Interfaith Council Board meeting, followed by a meeting of the Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa where Laird Hayes, an NFL line referee, was the speaker.

I invited a former neighbor, Hank Weber of Newport Beach, to join me to hear Hayes. We were joined at the Rotary meeting by Mr. Irrelevant Week founder Paul Salata and former Newport Beach City manager Homer Bludau.

On June 14, the board of directors of the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce, where my wife, Barbara, is the chief executive, came to the Balboa Bay Club for a two-day planning session that included an afternoon at the Newport Beach Aquatic Park.

We ran into two longtime friends we hadn't seen for 20-plus years, Billy Whitford, the founder and chief executive of the Aquatic Park, and Sam Couch, who used to be on the YMCA swim team with our daughter Stacy and is now an instructor at the Aquatic Park.

On June 8, more than 115 people attended the luncheon where 10 Newport-Mesa residents were inducted into the Daily Pilot Community & Clubs Hall of Fame at American Legion Post 291 in Newport Beach.

Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach was the Master of Ceremonies, Costa Mesa United president Gordon Bowley provided the invocation, American Legion member John Stansbury led us in the national anthem, and Explorers presented the colors.

Those inducted were Irvina Kanarek, Rewrite Beautiful; Sanjay B. Dalal, Rotary Club of Newport-Irvine; Cynthia Culp, American Legion Post 291; Carol Proctor, Harbor Mesa Lions Club; John W. Kruse, Exchange Club of Newport Harbor, Carol Cowden, Assistance League of Newport-Mesa; Joseph Panarisi, Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club; Laura Dietz, Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club; Rick Kapko, Costa Mesa United; Roger Gilbert, Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa.

Daily Pilot Editor John Canalis and City Editor Jamie Rowe helped with the presentations to the honorees. Congratulations one and all!

Irrelevant Week around the corner

Irrelevant Week XXXVII will honor the last NFL draft pick, Chandler Harnish, the first week of July. On July 2, Harnish will be the guest of Disneyland and, at 5 p.m., he will be welcomed to Newport Beach with the "Kick-Off" arrival beach party at Newport Dunes. Cost is $20 per person, which includes a fun-filled evening of food, music and fun. Parking is included.
