Local duo gains All-CIF recognition

McCormack of CdM and Trancoso of Estancia come away with All-CIF honors in baseball.

June 15, 2012

Corona del Mar High pitcher Andrew McCormack and Estancia center fielder Alex Trancoso each earned All-CIF Southern Section baseball honors in Division 3 and Division 4, respectively.

The two seniors are the only local All-CIF players this season.

McCormack, who is bound for Stanford, led CdM in practically every pitching and offensive category and helped the Sea Kings (16-12, 8-7 in the Pacific Coast League) return to the CIF Southern Section playoffs after missing the postseason in 2011.

The right-hander went 8-3 with a 1.57 earned-run average. He struck out 37 batters in 71 1/3 innings and threw five complete games, almost going the distance in half of his 11 starts.

As a hitter, McCormack, a first-team All-Pacific Coast League selection, hit .375 and drove in 22 runs. He had five doubles, drew 11 walks and only struck out a half-dozen times in 95 plate appearances. He had a .436 on-base percentage and .438 slugging percentage.

Trancoso set the table for Estancia, keeping the team in contention for an Orange Coast League title throughout the season. Estancia (17-9, 12-3) finished one game out of first place.

During the regular season, Trancoso put up outstanding numbers: a .448 batting average and .525 on-base percentage, 17 RBIs, nine doubles, one triple, 25 runs scored and 13 for 13 in stolen-base attempts.

Estancia Coach Nate Goellrich said Trancoso, a first-team All-Orange Coast League pick, plans to play at Irvine Valley College.

Both Trancoso and McCormack played in the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim's 45th annual Orange County North-South All-Star Game for seniors at Glover Stadium last week. McCormack started on the mound for the South team and Trancoso in center.
